For those who need encouragement in taking up the pleasures of the long-distance footpath, a good beginning might be Chapter 1 (A: Adventure). If you want to know what to bring with you, look at Chapter 12 (L: Lists) and if you want to consider whom to bring with you, check out Chapter 3 (C: Companions), Chapter 11 (K: Kids) or even 4 (D: Dogs). If you need some hints on where to head, particularly in Britain, consider Chapter 22 (V: Viewpoints); in the U.K. you will also find use for Chapter 20 (T: Transportation), Chapter 2 (B: Bed & Breakfast), Chapter 8 (H: Hotels), Chapter 16 (P: Pubs), Chapter 25 (Y: Youth Hostels), Chapter 6 (F: Food) and Chapter 23: (W: Weather). How to cope with health crises is discussed in Chapter 9 (I: Illness and Injury). What your feet will encounter on British footpaths is illustrated in Chapter 19 (S: Surfaces); human encounters are discussed in Chapter 5 (E: Encounters) and animal ones in Chapter 26 (Z: Zoo Story). Typical trailside chatter is revealed in Chapter 17 (Q: Questions). How to select and use an appropriate guidebook is covered in Chapter 7 (G: Guidebooks), maps in Chapter 13 (M: Maps), and hints on figuring it all out on the ground in Chapter 18 (R: Route finding). What to do when your route in blocked is considered in Chapter 15 (O: Obstruction!), how to react when you get lost in Chapter 24 (X: X The Unknown) and when to call it a day in Chapter 10 (J: Judgment). Finally, if you want a quick insight into the reliability or even the sanity of the present author, check out his catalogue of grievances in Chapter 21 (U: Unforgiven) or his rambling obsessions in Chapter 14 (N: Neurotica).

The authors contend that reading would be learned in normative ways, were not some factor intervening in the learning processes that would naturally take place. Thus the special learner learns in much the same way as the normative learner, except that the child with learning problems needs compensatory methods and adaptive means to provide for their special needs. Therefore, the research presented deals with usual strategies and methods that have been adapted and reconsidered in light of what is observed about the needs of the learner with problems.

A fresh and thoroughly modern take on Afterlife communication. Claire Broad is known as the Honest Medium, in What the Dead are Trying to Teach Claire shares invaluable insights into life after death gained through her own experience, whilst also drawing on the most up-to-date scientific studies on consciousness. As a young child, Claire experienced psychic phenomena, as she grew older her experiences and the communications she received became stronger, resulting in Spirit teachers making their presence known and guiding her. Naturally analytical and now an adult, Claire was forced to question the validity of her experiences against the common academic opinion surrounding survival after physical death and embarked upon a life long quest for the truth. In her refreshingly down to earth, honest and open manner, Claire shares personal stories to bring comfort and hope to many whilst highlighting findings from consciousness studies that challenge our understanding of the world and encourage us to consider our true nature and full potential. Claire teaches us why we may have confidence there is life after death, how we can heal and awaken spiritually through the therapeutic practice of mediumship and most importantly what we can learn from those already on the other side in order to make the most of this life whilst we are here. By the end of this compelling book, readers will have an understanding that we all have a natural connection to the spirit world and will have gained tips and tools to deepen this connection; that death is an illusion; that our loved ones can visit us after their passing and that we can learn to recognise the signs; that genuine mediumship is a therapeutic practice and why visiting a medium is nothing to be feared; that spirit guides gently support us all; that it is natural for a child to display psychic ability and what you can do to support a child that does; that there is scientific research to support the validity of mediumship and psychic ability and that it is possible to seek evidence for survival as well as keeping faith.

Basically, [Barth] takes several people from his early novels and has them all starting to write to each other, and to him, their letters and experiences directing the plot. And what starts out as what could be a too-cute literary trick winds up being extremely revealing, as the characters pour themselves into the letters, regardless of whom they're writing to, as the plot skips and slips through time. On one level it acts as a sequel to those early novels, continuing their stories and although it's not really required to read those books, I'm not going to pretend it doesn't help. The best thing to do would be to read those old novels in one block and then move onto this . . . I read them some years ago so I was a little fuzzy on the finer points. But I picked it up. But Barth captures the voices of his old characters well and even if you didn't know who was writing what letter, you could tell. And thus they tell the recepient, and us, about their hopes and fears, they mingle together, they lie, they come unglued, and by the end you sort of get a tapestry of their thoughts. There's a plot weaving through here but sometimes it becomes hard to connect it with six different people discussing different angles of it with you, but I just went with it and enjoyed the writing for what it was. --Michael Battaglia at Amazon.com.
