Pikler demuestra que el niño aprende a sentarse y a andar aunque no se le siente ni se le lleve de la mano. El desarrollo motor se produce de modo espontáneo, mediante su actividad autónoma, en función de la maduración orgánica y nerviosa. Al sentirse libre, el pequeño se muestra activo, interesado, serio en su juego, agradable en sus relaciones, ágil, diestro y preciso en sus movimientos sin esforzarse demasiado al hacerlos y relajado en su cuerpo; va aprendiendo con flexibilidad y con prudencia las sucesivas habilidades motoras con su propia acción y en los momentos que él elige.
