This volume of essays brings together scholars of ancient philosophy and some of today's most distinguished moral philosophers to discuss Aristotle's ethics and the problems of moral realism. One of the central and perennial philosophical problems is the question of whether our ethical assertions and beliefs can be justifiably claimed to rest on some objective foundation. As an upholder of the objectivity of ethics and as one of the most important ethical thinkers in the history of philosophy, Aristotle's writings on these questions are of the greatest interest. Indeed, much of recent moral philosophy has looked directly to Aristotle for inspiration on the problem of moral objectivity. For example, "virtue theorists" were influenced by Aristotle in their proposal that what determines the right thing to do in a particular case is what the virtuous man would do. Similarly, "sensibility theorists" have found support for their view in Aristotle's remarks about the importance of the conditioning of one's desires for the development of virtue and knowledge about the human good.

"The Ethics" is Aristotle's most important study of personal morality. For many centuries, it has been a widely read and influential book. Though written more than 2,000 years ago, it offers the modern reader many valuable insights into human needs since people have not changed significantly in the many years since Aristotle first lectured on ethics at the Lyceum in Athens. In this book, Aristotle insists that no known absolute moral standards exist. Any ethical theory must be based partly on an understanding of psychology and firmly grounded in human nature and daily life realities.

What is the good life? For Aristotle doing good and doing well were one and the same and could be realised in a single life. This text examines how we can draw this conclusion from Aristotle's works, while also studying how this conception of the good life relates to contemporary ideas of morality.

Excerpt from The Moral Philosophy of Aristotle: Consisting of a Translation of the Nicomachean Ethics, and of the Paraphrase Attributed to Andronicus of Rhodes, With an Introductory Analysis of Each Book Four years ago one of the most eminent of English Aristotelians expressed the opinion that "the problem how to translate Aristotle into English has not yet been solved ... The problem is how to convey, in readable English, a philosophical style, full of technical terms for which we have no exact representatives. Circumlocution, or paraphrase, becomes necessary; the question is, how to use this with the greatest tact, so as, while conveying Aristotle's exact meaning, to retain something of his manner." (Sir Alexander Grant, art. Aristotle. in the 'Encyclopædia Britannica,' 9th edition, vol. ii. p. 523.) The present work, though planned and begun before these remarks appeared, may be regarded as being, to some extent, in answer to the challenge which they imply. Its aim is to make the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle intelligible to a modern reader. It endeavours to do so chiefly by modifying the style in which tho original is written. For whether it be that the mind of an average Greek student was capable of greater concentration than the mind of an average English student, or that what remains is rather a rough draft than a completed treatise, there is no doubt that the style of Aristotle's work is to most modern readers intricate and obscure. Ancient ethical theories, based on the notions of virtue and happiness, have struck many as an attractive alternative to modern theories. But we cannot find out whether this is true until we understand ancient ethics--and to do this we need to examine the basic structure of ancient ethical theory, not just the details of one or two theories. In this book, Annas brings together the results of a wide-ranging study of ancient ethical philosophy and presents it in a way that is easily accessible to anyone with an interest in ancient or modern ethics. She examines the fundamental notions of happiness and virtue, the role of nature in ethical justification and the relation between concern for self and concern for others. Her careful examination of the ancient debates and arguments shows that many widespread assumptions about ancient ethics are quite mistaken. Ancient ethical theories are not egoistic, and do not depend for their acceptance on metaphysical theories of a teleological kind. Most centrally, they are recognizably theories of morality, and the ancient disputes about the place of virtue in happiness can be seen as akin to modern disputes about the demands of morality.

One of the most important philosophical works in history, a work that has had tremendous influence on philosophy, literature, and psychology, and has helped lay the foundations of the modern day intellectual landscape. The influence of 'The Nicomachean Ethics' is still visible in the works of philosophers of the 21st century, such as Martha Nussbaum and Alasdair MacIntyre. With remarkable lucidity, Aristotle tackles the question of the nature of happiness, and that of moral and intellectual virtues. He aims to prove that both are linked to and indivisible from one another—that virtuous behaviour is necessary if happiness is to be obtained—and from this he maps out the steps to follow and the requirements to achieve it. In short, 'The Nicomachean Ethics' sketches out a hierarchy of virtues to find the highest good a human can accomplish, which in turn will lead them to true happiness. Aristotle (384–322 BC) is one of the most influential philosophers in history. His achievements and the breadth of his knowledge, though, do not stop at philosophy. He is also among the rare thinkers to have approached all the fields of knowledge he came across (biology, physics, metaphysics, logic, poetics, politics, rhetoric, ethics, economics) with success. Among his works, the most lauded are: "Metaphysics", "On the Soul" and "Poetics".

This is a collection of the late Heda Segvic's papers in ancient moral philosophy. At the time of her death at age forty-five in 2003, Segvic had already established herself as an important figure in ancient philosophy, making bold new arguments about the nature of Socratic intellectualism and the intellectual influences that shaped Aristotle's ideas. Segvic had been working for some time on a monograph on practical knowledge that would interpret Aristotle's ethical theory as a response to Protagoras. The essays collected here are those on which her reputation rests, including some that were intended to form the backbone of her projected monograph. The papers range from a literary study of Homer's influence on Plato's Protagoras to analytic studies of Aristotle's metaphysics and his ideas about deliberation. Most of the papers reflect directly or indirectly Segvic's idea that both Socrates' and Aristotle's universalism and objectivism in ethics could be traced back to their opposition to Protagorean relativism. The book represents the considerable achievements of one of the most talented scholars of ancient philosophy of her generation.
