In Return Engagements artist and critic Việt Lê examines contemporary art in Cambodia and Việt Nam to rethink the entwinement of militarization, trauma, diaspora, and modernity in Southeast Asian art. Highlighting artists tied to Phnom Penh and Sài Gòn and drawing on a range of visual art as well as documentary and experimental films, Lê points out that artists of Southeast Asian descent are often expected to address the twin traumas of armed conflict and modernization, and shows how desirable art on these themes is on international art markets. As the global art market fetishizes trauma and violence, artists strategically align their work with those tropes in ways that Lê suggests allow them to reinvent such aesthetics and discursive spaces. By returning to and refashioning these themes, artists such as Tiffany Chung, Rithy Panh, and Sopheap Pich challenge categorizations of “diasporic” and “local” by situating themselves as insiders and outsiders relative to Cambodia and Việt Nam. By doing so, they disrupt dominant understandings of place, time, and belonging in contemporary art.

“[Harry Turtledove] handles his huge cast with admirable skill. The insights into racial politics elevate this novel to a status above mere entertainment, although it provides that aplenty.”—Publishers Weekly It’s 1941, and an alliance of peace holds in check the most powerful nations of the world—but it is an uneasy peace. Japan dominates the Pacific, the Russian tsar rules Alaska, and England, under Winston Churchill, chafes for a return to its former glory. Behind this façade of world order, America is a bomb waiting to explode. Jake Featherston, the megalomaniacal leader of the Confederate States of America, is just the man to light the fuse. Opposite him is Al Smith, a Socialist U.S. president in the Philadelphia White House. Smith is a living symbol of hope for a nation that has been through the hell of war and depression. Featherston and his Freedom Party are determined to conquer their Northern neighbor at any cost. After crushing a Negro rebellion in his own nation, Featherston sends Confederate army planes to attack Philadelphia. In the aftermath of the CSA blitzkrieg, the war machine spins a vortex of destruction, betrayal, and fury that no one—not even Jake Featherston himself—can control. “Turtledove plays heady games with actual history, scattering object lessons and bitter ironies along the way. [Return Engagement features] strong, complex characters against a sweeping alt-historical background.”—Kirkus Reviews “Another absorbing installment of [Turtledove’s] character-centered alternate-history saga.”—Booklist

This book provides a complete guide to almost everything an organization needs to implement a strategic approach to engaging everyone in organizational goals in a systematic way." - Grace Swanson, Vice President, Human Capital, Accumold "As a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship for most of my career, and founder of two leading companies in sales and marketing management, I know that delivering promises is one of the most critical strategies for success. Yet too many organizations fail to address the importance of engaging all stakeholders in organizational goals. Enterprise Engagement: The Roadmap is the only book I know that focuses on how to apply a strategic and tactical approach to engagement across the enterprise in a systematic way." - Gary Rhoads, Stephen Mack Covey Professor of Marketing at the Marriot School of Business at Brigham Young University and Chairman of Xvoyant"I have spent much of my career helping organizations develop great cultures, and in the end a successful strategy requires a CEO-led approach to connecting employees, managers, customers, vendors, suppliers, the community - everyone inside and outside the organization who has a stake in its success. I have repeatedly referenced almost every chapter in Enterprise Engagement: The Roadmap since the first edition came out, as it's the only book I know of that puts together in one place all the tactics needed to address engagement to achieve organizational results." - Barbara Porter, Executive Director, Ernst & Young"The world of organizational management has talked about the issue of engagement for going on two decades, and it's clear that despite all the discussion and expenditures on motivational speakers, leadership coaching, rewards and recognition, permission marketing, innovation, diversity, etc., little has changed. Enterprise Engagement: The Roadmap provides a game plan for a strategic and systematic approach that connects the dots between all stakeholders and the tools needed to engage them in the organizational mission." - Dr. Ron McKinley, Vice President, Chief Standards Officer, Director, University of Texas Medical Branch Healthcare Management Institute, and Chair of ISO Technical Committees 260, Human Resource Management and 304, Healthcare Organization Management
