This book covers Rudolf Steiner’s biography, presented from an educational point of view and also unfolds the different aspects of Steiner’s educational thought in Waldorf Education. His point of view is unique in that it relates education to a wide horizon of different contexts, such as social, pedagogical, evolutionary and spiritual aspects. His ideas are philosophical (ethical, epistemological, ontological). However, above all, they are based on spiritual understanding of the human being and the world. In many ways, they stand in stark contrast to the views that inform present mainstream educational thought and practice. Nevertheless, there are points where Steiner’s ideas can find a resonance in more recent educational thought. Steiner was in many ways ahead of his time and his educational ideas are still relevant to many present day educational issues and problems.
This book marks the centenary of the first Waldorf School, established by Rudolf Steiner in Stuttgart in 1919. With around 1,150 Waldorf Schools and over 1,800 Waldorf Kindergartens established in over 60 countries, this book examines and analyses how the initial impulse of Steiner education has grown over the last century to become a worldwide alternative movement in education. The author documents and compares the growth and development of Waldorf schools and Steiner-inspired educational institutions around the world, and determines the extent to which the original underpinning philosophy has been maintained against the contexts and challenges of contemporary global trends in education. Within such diverse international contexts, it is significant that the schools retain such a distinctive identity, and clearly redefine how ‘alternative education’ can be viewed. This comprehensive volume will be of interest and value to scholars of Steiner education and Waldorf schools as well as alternative education more widely.
Rudolf Steiner's beautiful meditative verses for the yearly cycle have been used by countless people over the years. It might be a truism and needless to say that all teachers should make efforts to understand their students. Real understanding is a sure foundation and support for children's healthy development, without which lessons will be random and connect with the students only superficially. Skilled teachers try to understand their students so they can lift learning beyond mere compulsion and drills. Rudolf Steiner's ideal was the weekly pedagogical meetings in Waldorf schools to support the teachers' developing insight into their students. He exhorted them to "become psychologists," though not in the sense commonly understood. He demonstrated the "art of evolving insight" himself during faculty meetings in which he participated. It is an essential to the quality of any teacher's work to develop skills of perception, reflection, and insight. Christof Wiechert presents Rudolf Steiner's guidelines anew. He elaborates the art of child study as a key tool for nurturing student development, as well as the teacher's growing powers of insight. In short, the approach described here can enliven and support the educational and social dimensions of a whole school community.
6 lectures and an essay, 1919-1920 (CW 297) World War I destroyed the structures, values, and self-confidence that created the seeming greatness of the nineteenth century. In its place stood ruins and the shards of a civilization. In response to this, Emil Molt--the director of the Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory and a student of Rudolf Steiner--decided to establish a school to educate people who could create a new culture. A seer "sees' more than meets the eye, using the eyes of the soul along with the physical eyes. As all seeing is a form of cognition, higher seeing is the key to higher cognition or knowing. For human beings the spiritual world is hidden deep within the disguise of the world available to the senses and deep within the human psyche, and human consciousness, enmeshed as it usually is in the physical senses, cannot easily be aware of both worlds.
