The answer is developed through readings of Martin Heidegger, Richard Rorty, Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre and other historically-minded philosophers. The second volume pursues the themes of the first volume in the context of discussions of recent European philosophy focusing on the work of Heidegger and Derrida. His four essays on Heidegger include "Philosophy as Science, as Metaphor and as Politics" and "Heidegger, Kundera, and Dickens;" three essays on Derrida (including "Deconstruction and Circumvention" and "Is Derrida a Transcendental Philosopher?") are followed by a discussion of the uses to which Paul de Man and his followers have put certain Derridean ideas. Rorty's concluding essays broaden outward with an essay on "Freud and Moral Deliberation" and essays discussing the social theories and political attitudes of various contemporary figures--Foucault, Lyotard, Habermas, Unger, and Castoriadis.

Truth and myth are predominant themes in Martin Heidegger's thinking. Heidegger showed that ancient Greek understanding of truth as aletheia («unconcealment») can teach us about learning from the wisdom that is found in myths and can also enhance human existence. This book describes some of Heidegger's major insights concerning truth as aletheia and their implications. It also shows how Heidegger's thinking on truth discloses the shallowness and the disrespect for truth in the writings of four well-known postmodernist writers: Lyotard, MacIntyre, Rorty, and Derrida.
In East and West: Fusion of Horizons, Kwang-Sae Lee seeks to find and develop themes of mutual resonance in Eastern and Western thoughts, trying to interpret across boundaries of culture and age. The book discusses some general "methodological problems" pertaining to the "Meeting of East and West," Confucianism and Kantian moral philosophy, Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Eastern thought, and outstanding themes such as social practice theory, holistic individualism and pluralism. It also examines Eastern thought (Confucianism and Taoism in particular) and pragmatism (Rorty in particular). The last part introduces Korean philosophy and some important Korean philosophers. Lee believes that there is vital need for reassessing the eminent relevance of revitalized East Asian culture(s) to the contemporary world. It is with this conviction that he has written this important and timely book. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kwang-Sae Lee is Professor of Philosophy at Kent State University. He holds a PhD from Yale University. Lee was interested mainly in analytic philosophy, philosophy of science, Kant, and the history of Western philosophy. His focus has gradually but ineluctably shifted to world philosophy. He has co-authored Cultures of East and West and penned many papers mainly on Kant and world philosophy. Lee lives in Kent, Ohio, with his wife.
