The strict regulations on the Internet imposed by the Chinese government on its cyberspace are well known and the Chinese web experience is heavily spoiled day by day. Nevertheless, the typical Chinese Internet user is often not aware of what is going on in China and users’ perception of the Internet freedom issues is very low ( Global Internet User Survey 2012). This book focuses its exploration on the implications and repercussions of a typical Chinese user, accustomed to the pervasive Internet censorship in China, who starts benefiting from an open and democratic Internet environment as the Italian one. Will the Chinese user’s perception of the problems of freedom of speech and open access to information increase? Sergio de Eccher After having completed his Master degree in Political Science and International Relations at University of Padua (Italy) with a thesis centered on the new threats to States’ security within the 2.0 era, Sergio de Eccher (1977) has focused his research on the role of the Internet within the authoritarian States. During his 5 years of Phd studies at University of St. Gallen (Switzerland), he has examined the role of the Internet in China and the strict regulations imposed by the Chinese government on its cyberspace. This book revolves around Chinese users’ perception of the Internet freedom issues present in China and its core focuses on the Internet habits of the typical Chinese user within a controlled web environment. The innovation of this project is based on the implications occurring after that a Chinese user living in Italy, accustomed to the pervasive Internet censorship present within the Chinese Internet, starts benefiting from an open Internet dimension within a democratic country, as the Italian cyber-society.

*Shortlisted for the Moore Prize on Human Rights Literature* A powerful memoir by Nury Turkel that lays bare China’s repression of the Uyghur people. Turkel is cofounder and board chair of the Uyghur Human Rights Project and a commissioner for the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. In recent years, the People’s Republic of China has rounded up as many as three million Uyghurs, placing them in what it calls “reeducation camps,” facilities most of the world identifies as concentration camps. There, the genocide and enslavement of the Uyghur people are ongoing. The tactics employed are reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution, but the results are far more insidious because of the technology used, most of it stolen from Silicon Valley. In the words of Turkel, “Communist China has created an open prison-like environment through the most intrusive surveillance state that the world has ever known while committing genocide and enslaving the Uyghurs on the world’s watch.” As a human rights attorney and Uyghur activist who now serves on the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, Turkel tells his personal story to help explain the urgency and scope of the Uyghur crisis. Born in 1970 in a reeducation camp, he was lucky enough to survive and eventually make his way to the US, where he became the first Uyghur to receive an American law degree. Since then, he has worked as a prominent lawyer, activist, and spokesperson for his people and advocated strong policy responses from the liberal democracies to address atrocity crimes against his people. The Uyghur crisis is turning into the greatest human rights crisis of the twenty-first century, a systematic cleansing of an entire race of people in the millions. Part Anne Frank and Hannah Arendt, No Escape shares Turkel’s personal story while drawing back the curtain on the historically unprecedented and increasing threat from China.

This book explores to what extent constitutional principles are put under strain in the social media environment, and how constitutional safeguards can be established for the actors and processes that govern this world: in other words, how to constitutionalise social media. Millions of individuals around the world use social media to exercise a broad range of fundamental rights. However, the governance of online platforms may pose significant threats to our constitutional guarantees. The chapters in this book bring together a multi-disciplinary group of experts from law, political science, and communication studies to examine the challenges of constitutionalising what today can be considered the modern public square. The book analyses the ways in which online platforms exercise a sovereign authority within their digital realms, and sheds light on the ambiguous relationship between social media platforms and state regulators. The chapters critically examine multiple methods of constitutionalising social media, arguing that the constitutional response to the global challenges generated by social media is necessarily plural and multilevel. All topics are presented in an accessible way, appealing to scholars and students in the fields of law, political science and communication studies. The book is an essential guide to understanding how to preserve constitutional safeguards in the social media environment.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I have lived in Washington, DC, as a free Uyghur for more than twenty years. I have not seen my mother since 2004. I have been able to spend only eleven months with my parents since I left China twenty-seven years ago. #2 I was born in 1970 in a Communist labor camp in Kashgar, China. My mother was imprisoned for having relatives in a hostile country, and I was malnourished because my mother was malnourished. Between the tiny cracks in the boarded-up window, my mother could just steal glimpses of Kashgar, a city that was already a trading post on the Silk Road two thousand years ago. #3 My father came from the town of Ghulja in the north, near the border with Kazakhstan, a more European part of the country. He was the son of a famous Uyghur dancer, and he had been brought by authorities to Kashgar as part of a move to integrate Uyghur intellectuals from the north into the ancient city of Kashgar. #4 I was a studious kid. I read a lot, and I played soccer and ran in my spare time. I didn’t want to join the Chinese elite, and I wanted to be free and live with respect and dignity.

‘Readers will come away startled at just how fragile the online infrastructure we all depend on is and how much influence China wields – both technically and politically' – Jason Q. Ng, author of Blocked on Weibo 'An urgent and much needed reminder about how China's quest for cyber sovereignty is undermining global Internet freedom’ – Kristie Lu Stout, CNN ‘An important and incisive history of the Chinese internet that introduces us to the government officials, business leaders, and technology activists struggling over access to information within the Great Firewall’ – Adam M. Segal, author of The Hacked World Order Once little more than a glorified porn filter, China’s ‘Great Firewall’ has evolved into the most sophisticated system of online censorship in the world. As the Chinese internet grows and online businesses thrive, speech is controlled, dissent quashed, and attempts to organise outside the official Communist Party are quickly stamped out. But the effects of the Great Firewall are not confined to China itself. Through years of investigation James Griffiths gained unprecedented access to the Great Firewall and the politicians, tech leaders, dissidents and hackers whose lives revolve around it. As distortion, post-truth and fake news become old news James Griffiths shows just how far the Great Firewall has spread. Now is the time for a radical new vision of online liberty.

**Available now: Whistleblower Frances Haugen's searing exposé of the internal workings of Facebook revealing the company's struggles to regain control over its platform and to stop the spread of misinformation** __________ In the spring of 2021, when news outlets feasted on "the Facebook Files," Frances Haugen went public as the former employee who blew the whistle on the company by copying tens of thousands of documents. She testified to Congress and spoke to the media. She was hailed at President Biden's first State of the Union Address. She made sure everyone understood exactly what the documents revealed: Facebook not only set its algorithm to reward extremism, it knew that its customers were using the platform to foment violence, to spread falsehoods, to diminish the self-esteem of young people, and more. But how was it that Frances was the only employee at the company who dared to step forward? The answer to that question is an inspiring tale of one young woman's life and the choices she made. From an isolated childhood in Iowa to an unaccredited college, to one among the few women at Google in its heyday, Frances Haugen learned how to focus on what mattered, and to ignore her critics. To harness the strength of standing in the truth. The Power of One is equally inspiring - the story of a woman who went against the grain, again and again, and changed the world - and horrifying, as the culture and practices of Facebook are brought into the bright light of day, for the first time. __________
