Finally available, a high quality book of the original classic edition of Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook. It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, after many years, back in print. This is a new and freshly published edition of this culturally important work by Maria Montessori, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work today. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook: This is the aim which underlies my method of infant education, and it is for this reason that certain principles which it enunciates, together with that part which deals with the technique of their practical application, are not of a general character, but have special reference to the particular case of the child from three to seven years of age, i.e., to the needs of a formative period of life. ...A room of this kind is larger than the customary class-rooms, not only because the little tables and separate chairs take up more space, but also because a large part of the floor must be free for the children to spread their rugs and work upon them. ...In the box of material the first three objects which are likely to attract the attention of a little child from two and a half to three years old are three solid pieces of wood, in each of which is inserted a row of ten small cylinders, or sometimes discs, all furnished with a button for a 30 handle. ...He exercises his hands in the delicate act of taking hold of the button with the tips of one or two fingers, and in the little movements of the hand and arm as he mixes the cylinders, without letting them fall and without making too much noise and puts them back again each in its own place. ...When initiating the child into the education of the sense of touch, the teacher must always take an active part the first time; not only must she show the child "how it is done," her interference is a little more definite still, for she takes hold of his hand and guides it to touch the surfaces with the finger-tips in the lightest possible way.

"Dr. Montessori has performed a real service in preparing this guide to her method. The handbook will now proceed to take its place as the real exposition of the Montessori system." -Boston Transcript "A full and clear account of the famous method of child education." -Saturday Review "Contains much the same material as did 'The Montessori Method,' but in a clear form." -Atheneum "The number of books on Dr. Montessori's new educational theories continues to increase....We now have "Dr. Montessori's Own Handbook' of the system specially written by the expert herself as a guide to teachers and parents." -The American Review of Reviews "Many enthusiastic prophets have arisen to expound Dr. Montessori's ideas to an interested public, but this manual for classroom or home bears the thumb print of authority. Dr. Montessori, herself, briefly outlines the system (exhaustively set forth in her 'Montessori Method'), describes her apparatus and explains very clearly its use. She also tells again the surprising results, the spontaneous discipline and obedience, obtained among children from three to six in the Children's House, where the organization of their work is complete, and where (all cause of rebellion being eliminated) their 'freedom is almost absolute.' Dr. Montessori's means include an environment suited to a child's physical needs, and didactic material fitted to his intellectual wants; through which he may train his senses by the exercise of observation, comparison and judgment, quicken his psychic qualities and become master of mind and body. She would have the child's eye discover that control of the error in placing his cylinders or geometrical insets lies in the material itself. The author insists that any one who would guide the child in use of the sensory exercise should first experiment with the material herself, and realize the difficulties the child will encounter. The book would help the mother who was heard to say, 'I became so interested in reading 'The Montessori Method' I sent for the whole outfit. It's come, but I haven't dared even show it to Jane.'" -Home Progress "Supplements by a clearer and more simple description of author's famous method of child education." -New York State Library Ninety-Seventh Annual Report "An authentic manual of the Montessori system written by Dr. Montessori herself as a guide to teachers and parents. It is a concisely written volume of little more than a hundred pages which contains a clear account of the method, and includes a description of the Montessori apparatus with instructions for its use." -Booklist

The Montessori Method represents an explicit idealism and turn away from war and violence toward peace and reconstruction. It is built on coherent visions of how to improve human society by helping children realize their full potential as intelligent, creative, whole persons. In the Montessori Method, children are viewed as active authors of their own development, strongly influenced by natural, dynamic, self-righting forces within themselves, opening the way toward growth and learning. Teachers depend for their work with children on carefully prepared, aesthetically pleasing environments that serve as a pedagogical tool and provide strong messages about the curriculum and about respect for children. Partnering with parents is highly valued in the Montessori Method, and children are evaluated by means other than traditional tests and grades.
