Beyond Babel provides a general introduction to and overview of the languages that are significant for the study of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel. Included are essays on biblical and inscriptional Hebrew, Akkadian, Northwest Semitic dialects (Ammonite, Edomite, and Moabite), Arabic, Aramaic, Egyptian, Hittite, Phoenician, postbiblical Hebrew, and Ugaritic. Each chapter in the volume shares a common format, including an overview of the language, a discussion of its significance for the Hebrew Bible, and a list of ancient sources and modern resources for further study of the language. A general introduction by John Huehnergard discusses the importance of the study of Near Eastern languages for biblical scholarship, helping to make the volume an ideal resource for persons beginning an in-depth study of the Hebrew Bible.
The contribution that scholarly organizations make to the study of languages and literatures is a service to the value of systematically learning and using meaning—understanding that meaning operates in systems. Constructively speaking, these organizations support the teaching and research of our world’s experts in grammar, genre, medium, production, reception, exchange, critique, appreciation, and so on. More defensively, they are bulwarks against systems of misinformation, against the empowerment of misrepresentation and distrust between people. The chapters in this volume range from the Old Testament to Facebook and from East Asia to West Africa via Australia, the Americas, and Europe. The scholarly strength forged across that range speaks to similar strengths that so many scholarly organizations devoted to studies in languages and literatures have cultivated and maintained—often in the face of government indifference or hostility towards the Humanities. In the nascent field of management theory, many are seeking to identify the key principles that enable organizations (for profit and non-profit) to achieve excellence. Most researchers assume that there is no divine involvement in building great organizations or if there is, it is minimal. It is as if the principles or laws that facilitate organizational excellence exist without any origin or creator. This perspective was the view of the people who engaged in the Tower of Babel project in Genesis 11. They presumed to build the tower using the best practices of the time, but without regard to God. They had a modicum of success, but in the end, the project and organization were doomed. Why? Because to assume that God is not involved in organizations is unreality. The presupposition of the book Beyond Babel is that God created the universe including all the principles or laws for all the activities of the universe. This means that God created the laws of science, the humanities, family life, community life, and management. Beyond Babel offers a model for building great organizations predicated on the philosophy that God has divinely ordained the values and principles that will facilitate organizational excellence. The book articulates an organizational model that moves beyond the philosophy that undergirds most organizations today which tends to dismiss divine involvement and direction. Beyond Babel presents an approach to building great organizations based on alignment with God and His purposes. In the end, God blesses people and organizations that are in alignment with Him. The Tower of Babel project was built by an organization that did not align with God-their motives were wrong.Getting beyond Babel is about alignment with God-embracing His philosophy, values, and principles. Only then can anyone build a truly enduring, excellent organization.
In dialogue with the most famous myth for the origin of different languages – The Tower of Babel – A Psychoanalytic Exploration on Sameness and Otherness: Beyond Babel? provides a series of timely reflections on the themes of sameness and otherness from a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective. How are we dealing with communication and its difficulties, the confusion of tongues and loss of common ground within a European context today? Can we move beyond Babel?
