The current study tested a five level taxonomy of training delivery systems organized according to information richness: print, video, computer-based training, distance learning and face-to-face. The information richness measure used was based on the work of Daft & Lengel (1984) and consisted of four sub-scales: feedback, multiple cues, language variety and personal focus. Results clearly demonstrated that the overall rating of information richness significantly increased for each level of the taxonomy, indicating that technologies at the upper end of the taxonomy (e.g., face-to-face instruction)have a greater capacity to deliver information that facilitates learning. These findings support the use of a five level taxonomy of training delivery systems organized by information richness.
