On Dangerous Ground offers an innovative assessment of the complex role that his encounters with visual cultures-architecture, objects from earlier cultural epochs (antiquities), paintings, and illustrated books-played in that process. Diane O'Donoghue introduces, often using unpublished archival sources, the ways in which material phenomena profoundly informed Freud's decisions about what would, and would not, constitute the workings of an inner life. By returning to view content that Freud treated as forgettable, as distinct from repressed, O'Donoghue shows us a realm of experiences that Freud wished to remove from psychical meaning. These erasures form an amnesic core within Freud's psychoanalytic project, an absence that includes difficult aspects of his life narrative, beginning with the dislocations of his early childhood that he declared not worth remembering. What is made visible here is far from the inconsequential surface of experience; rather, we are shown a dangerous ground that exceeds the limits of what Freud wished to include within his early model of mind. In Freud's relation to visual cultures we find clues to what he attempted, in crafting his unconscious, to remove from sight.
The saturation of the English-speaking world with psychoanalytic concepts was due largely to one brilliant analyst, Ernest Jones. As Freud's disciple, colleague, and biographer-and the man who rescued Freud from the Nazis-he led the international psychoanalytic movement, shifting its vortex from Vienna to London and spreading its influence to Toronto, New York, and Boston. While negotiating the ferocious politics of the movement, Jones also managed an imposing series of liaisons, including an heiress and her maid, analysands, and a “Druid Bride.” Unlike Freud, he never had to wonder, “What do women want?”
Soon after their first meeting in 1908, Freud's future biographer, Ernest Jones, initiated a correspondence with the founder of psychoanalysis that would continue until Freud's death in London in 1939. Jones, a Welsh-born neurologist, would become a principal player in the development of psychoanalysis in England and the United States. This volume makes available from British and American archives nearly seven hundred previously unpublished letters, postcards, and telegrams, the vast majority of the three-decade correspondence between Freud and his admiring younger colleague. These letters and notes, dashed off almost compulsively in the odd moments of busy professional lives in Toronto, Vienna, and London, in transit between meetings, or on holidays on the Continent, provide a lively account of the early years of the psychoanalytic movement and its fortunes during the turbulent interwar period. The reader is invited to share in the domestic and international news of the day, to make the acquaintance of the prominent personalities among the first generation of Freud's followers, and to witness the drama of complex rivalries and conflicting loyalties - including the personal and intellectual rupture between Freud and Jung, and Jones's unrelenting effort to maneuver politically "behind the scenes" in order to position himself within Freud's inner circle. Present in the correspondence also are the women who in differing ways touched the lives of both men and influenced their work - Loe Kann, Joan Riviere, Melanie Klein, and Anna Freud. While charting the progress of a personal friendship, this correspondence offers glimpses of the darker events of the time - the last days of theAustro-Hungarian Empire, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the rise of Nazism in Europe. Even though on a professional level the two correspondents differed on a striking array of issues - such as the theory of anxiety, the death and aggressive instincts, child analysis, female sexuality, and lay analysis - their letters are an affirmation of the intellectual and emotional bonds between these two very different men, who, as Jones put it so poignantly in his last letter to Freud, had "both made a contribution to human existence - even if in very different measure".

A dramatic true story about Sigmund Freud’s last-minute escape to London following the German annexation of Austria and the group of friends who made it possible. The Harvard List of Books in Psychology was first compiled in the 1930s, when each student in the department enjoyed the luxury of an individual tutorial. Together tutor and student could map out a course of reading. By 1938, the list had proved so useful that its 349 titles were annotated and printed, though mainly for local consumption. Growth of an outside demand from students, librarians, and the reading public led to a supplement in 1944 and a number of successive editions bearing the present title. The present edition updates the List without expanding it beyond useful size: for each new title the compilers have faithfully tried to delete one, and new entries account for almost half of the present total of 744. Each title is annotated with descriptive and evaluative material.
