Shopping with Tom Bentley? You Won't Need a Receipt There’s only one thing more excited than a kid in a candy store: a kid in a candy store who can steal as much candy as he needs. The same kid later realizes that budgeting for high school is so restrictive—why not just steal all those shiny little (and big) things that caught his eye? Tom Bentley was that kid. He was a dedicated, accomplished shoplifter through his high school years, so much so that he treated it as a business, taking orders for record albums, tape recorders, clothes, liquor and all sorts of glittery little gewgaws from his peer clients, and instructing a small team of fellow five-fingerers in matters of the trade. During the four-year period between age 15 and 19, Bentley was a lunatic thief, and became more and more brazen: He dribbled basketballs out of stores, marched out holding new briefcases as if he were a businessman, strolled out with completely unrolled sleeping bags—a model student, er, shoplifter. He stopped—temporarily—only after spending a few days in jail for stealing a bottle of Scotch. Budgeting as a high school student can be so restrictive: Bentley felt that stealing all the things he “needed” seemed to be a reasonable answer. Even after graduation. That was Bentley's first experience running a business, and it was a successful one—with some unsuccessful consequences. Another detail: he was a Catholic altar boy from a nice, middle-class Southern California family. That didn’t seem to help with the shoplifting. Bentley developed some intriguing shoplifting techniques and shares them here. (Caution: don't try this at home—or in any stores!) Spend some time, from the late 60s through the 70s, journeying with Tom Bentley as he goes from Southern California to Canada to central Washington to Las Vegas, pilfering all the way. Sticky Fingers has examples of colorfully bad judgment, the cracking of the social contract, pangs of conscience, and humor—it’s lively, surprising, and fun. And mostly illegal.

Just one month after his 21st birthday, Peter Rudiak-Gould moved to Ujae, a remote atoll in the Marshall Islands located 70 miles from the nearest telephone, car, store, or tourist, and 2,000 miles from the closest continent. He spent the next year there, living among its 450 inhabitants and teaching English to its schoolchildren. At first blush, Surviving Paradise is a thoughtful and laugh-out-loud hilarious documentation of Rudiak-Gould’s efforts to cope with daily life on Ujae as his idealistic expectations of a tropical paradise confront harsh reality. But Rudiak-Gould goes beyond the personal, interweaving his own story with fascinating political, linguistic, and ecological digressions about the Marshall Islands. Most poignant are his observations of the noticeable effect of global warming on these tiny, low-lying islands and the threat rising water levels pose to their already precarious existence. An Eat, Pray, Love as written by Paul Theroux, Surviving Paradise is a disarmingly lighthearted narrative with a substantive emotional undercurrent.

The Roaring Twenties were bellowing along-until they weren't. In a splintered bar in Boston, Pinky deVroom, newspaperman, amateur cynic and would-be-novelist, clutches his sour Prohibition brandy and watches his world get sucked down into the vortex. Hope comes in the form of an astute, comely literary agent named Elfred. But hope can be its own form of hell. Watch game Pinky twist, squirm and waffle while the world wobbles. Literature has never had a hero named Pinky-but despite literature's measured qualms, this is its greatest chance. The Depression and Prohibition's consequences are fundamental to the work, as are the appearances of some real-life figures such as Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare & Company and Alice Hamilton, the pioneering scientist. The effects of lead poisoning, the unfettered joys of the "banana messenger" and the glories of Telechron clocks also have their time in the sun. As do rigorous bartending practices and the perils of owning a hat. But all those tributaries of the story return to Pinky: Through continued tests and failures, through the comradeship of good friends, through his own lacerations and partial healings, will he find fulfillment? Will those friends, a mysterious secret society, and the judicious prodding of the remarkable Doctor Alice Hamilton help him get the girl, the book deal, or at least hang on to his job? Or his hat?

The Films of Kore-eda Hirokazu: An Elemental Cinema draws readers into the first 13 feature films and 5 of the documentaries of award-winning Japanese film director Kore-eda Hirokazu. With his recent top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters, Kore-eda is arguably Japan’s greatest living director with an international viewership. He approaches difficult subjects (child abandonment, suicide, marginality) with a realistic and compassionate eye.The lyrical tone of the writing of Japanese film scholar Linda C. Ehrlich perfectly complements the understated, yet powerful, tone of the films. From An Elemental Cinema, readers will gain a special understanding of Kore-eda’s films through a novel connection to the natural elements as reflected in Japanese traditional aesthetics. An Elemental Cinema presents Kore-eda’s oeuvre as a connected whole with overarching thematic concerns, despite frequent generic experimentation. It also offers an example of how the poetics of cinema can be practiced in writing, as well as on the screen, and helps readers understand the films of this contemporary director as works of art that relate to their own lives.
