I often tell my patients that everything we put into our body has a potential to create untoward effects. Whether it is the fast food we eat because we do not take the time to eat a well-balanced diet, the lack of water we are drinking or medications that pose the risk of significant side effects or interacting with other medications that you may already be taking. Because of this, I tend to take the minimalists approach when it comes to prescribing medication. I am judicious in the choice of medications I use in my patients and try to limit what I prescribe to only those medications that I am certain will treat the condition for which they are being seen with the least possible risk for increase in untoward effects. After all, the first rule of the Hippocratic Oath is to first do no harm. Unfortunately, with new medications, I often find myself being asked to write for prescriptions that may not be properly suited for the situation or patient at hand. This is what I find so intriguing and refreshing about this book written by Ms. Christiansen. Her easy, step by step, explanation of breathing techniques, pressure point massage and tapping offer an almost side effect free method of improving your health regardless of what medical conditions you may have. I feel like it is a common sense approach to some well known and widely accepted alternative medicine techniques that empowers the patient to help take control of their health without adding medication and thus increasing the risk for medication induced reactions or interactions. I certainly believe alternative medicine can offer a viable alternative in conditions such as anxiety, depression, and hypertension. While, as Ms. Christiansen points out, these technique may not take the place of your medication, it is definitely an adjunct therapy which could prevent the need for additional medications in the future. In my opinion, it would be worthwhile to learn these simple techniques to see if they benefitted you and offered a natural alternative for treating an underlying medical condition you may have before simply adding another expensive medication which could result in unwanted negative side effects or other unforeseen medical complications. Intriguing Book of Poetry Published by a Brain Injury Survivor Gray Matters, Brain Injury: The Inside Perspective is a book filled with poetic insights of a woman who lived through a near-fatal brain injury. Her intimate knowledge and sense of humor can help survivors cope, as well as better understand their injuries and themselves. This book gives a personal sense or Inside Perspective of brain injury, thus enabling readers to better understand brain injury survivors. Brain injury occurs around the world in a variety of circumstances; in sports events, motor-vehicle accidents, terrorist attacks & war (and the list goes on)... According to the International Brain Injury Association, head injury is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Thirty percent of the soldiers that have returned from Iraq and are returning from Afghanistan have Traumatic Brain Injuries; more than two percent of the United States' population has sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury. Even with brain injury being so widespread, it is still hard to identify people living with the complications of this “invisible disability.” Ms. Lerner knows that the lack of awareness regarding brain injury makes survivors’ lives quite problematic. Writing Gray Matters was aimed at easing the integration of survivors back into the community. With a creative flair, she informs her readers about brain injury; she strikes a chord by sharing personal changes, loss and challenges, thus giving readers a sense of what it is like to walk in the shoes of a brain injury survivor. The chapters of the book cover topics including: brain injury, the symptoms of injury, rehabilitation, the brain, academic rehab, recreational therapy (including nature & the ocean's healing influence) and brain injury peer support. This book will considerably help brain injury survivors to better understand their injury and themselves, it will also aid them by being better understood by others. Gray Matters has helped family members and friends to better understand their loved ones. This book can also be a great asset to rehab professionals, by giving them a more intimate understanding of the dilemmas of a brain injury; for only when you know what an individual’s problem is, can you treat it. Gray Matters offers an articulate, introspective and sometimes humorous view of what it is like to suffer a near-fatal blow to the head and live with its complications. The author presents a thorough, subjective viewpoint as well as a professional and objective understanding of brain injury. Gray Matters presents a deeper understanding of the inner-workings of the mind and how in many ways, brain injury effects life as we know it.

Depression is hugely common in our society. The Mental Health Foundation believes that 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year, with mixed anxiety and depression being the most common. It affects 1 in 5 older people living in the community and 2 in 5 in care homes (MHF). This means that a staggering amount of people are having to deal with its devastating fallout at home, work and in retirement each year. However, evidence shows that a supervised programme of exercise can be as effective as antidepressants in treating mild or moderate depression (Mental Health Foundation / MIND). The link between exercise and mental wellbeing is a key part of recovery, and this user-friendly book is there to show the way. As with all the titles in the Exercise Your Way to Health series, the book contains a series of well-illustrated exercises specifically designed to combat depression and its physical side effects. Taking into account the prevalence of depression and the well-documented link between exercise and mental health, this is a timely publication, and one that will help many people regain control of their lives.
