"One of the great virtues of American/Medieval Goes North is ist wide range of contributors with fascinatingly diverse relationships to the main terms of analysis. There are academic scholars, poets, filmmakers, tribal elders, teachers at various levels; there are Indigenous people, people from settler colonial cultures, expats, immigrants. Their analytic and imaginative encounters with the North catch at the intensely symbolic and political charge of that locus. At a time when Medieval Studies cannot afford to ignore the period's popular uptake – cannot continue with business as usual in the face of white supremacists' brazen appropriations of the Middle Ages – this volume points to new possibilities for grappling with the uneasy relationships between the 'American' and the 'medieval'." – Prof Carolyn Dinshaw, New York University

Twelve years ago, on the Islands of Alariss, General Vayn gained power in a military coup after the emperor and empress had "a tragic accident". The Dragon Knights, an elite force loyal to the emperor, with the ability to transform into dragons, were defeated by Vayn's dark magic during a fierce battle. Vayn used his powers to bind the Dragon Knights in their human forms and banished them to the outer islands. Now the realm is in ruins and Vayn's Black Guard rampage through it, taking whatever they want. When Vayn's nephew, Quinn, discovers that he's the Crown Prince, the true heir, rescued and brought up by his former palace nursemaid, he swears to stand up to his uncle and claim what is rightfully his. Ignus the Flame Dragon has been trapped in human form as a blacksmith in the Floating Mountains. With the help of Thea, a feisty girl with magic skills and an uncertain past, Quinn must break the spell and return Ignus to his true Dragon Knight destiny. The first in an exciting new dragon-fantasy series for 9-12 year olds.

Chasing Dragons reconsiders the meaning of security. Additionally, it discusses avenues for resisting the insecurity produced by liberal states in the post-9/11 world. This critical approach reveals the pervasiveness of power in contemporary Canadian society, how this power is hidden, and the consequences for progressive social politics. Canada has received significant attention of late for initiating a government-sponsored medical marijuana program and for its flirtation with marijuana decriminalization. At best, these initiatives have contributed to Canada being seen as a reluctant ally by Washington, and, at worst, as a potential threat. The result of this impression is increasing American pressure to adopt more robust domestic security policies. At the same time, the Canadian public sees itself as holding unique values that differ from those held by its neighbour to the south. Supposedly these values are best reflected by a distinctive security outlook which produces reasonable responses to potential threats, a sharp contrast to the manic actions of the United States. Chasing Dragons challenges these presumptions of difference and exposes the security politics and policy that they make possible. Focusing on the issues surrounding illicit drugs, Kyle Grayson examines how discourses and practices of security policy actually contribute to the construction of Canadian national and cultural identity. This analysis is also relevant beyond Canada. Crucially, this book identifies the dangers of underestimating the centrality of race and geopolitics to civic conceptions of nationality in liberal societies.
