Paul, an 18-year-old-Greek, falls in love with Phoebe, the Jewish daughter of the High Priest of the Temple at Tarsus. To receive permission to marry, he must first convert to Judaism, involving the mutilation of circumcision and the study of the Torah. Sent to Jerusalem, he is told by the priests that the Torah is the absolute word of God as given to Moses and is not to be questioned. He finds many inaccuracies and repetitions and realizes that only part of it was written by Moses, that ancient scribes and greedy priests added the family histories and religios offerings later. He cannot tell his mentors of his doubts, so he writes them down privately. He finds evidence in the Torah that the God of Moses was vain, jealous, angry, vindictive and murderous and that those are the same characteristics of Moses himself. He sees Moses as an extremely bigoted, completely intollerant religious fanatic who assumed the role of God to the Israelites. After two years of study, Paul is appointed a Temple guard with the assignment to bring in members of a religious cult for questioning and possible trial for blasphemy. Anxious to complete the requirements and return to Tarsus, he aggressively pursues the members. He witnesses the crucifixion of Jesus and the stoning of Stephen. He meets a man who, though not a disciple, had followed Jesus long enough to be able to tell Paul about his teachings. The man downplays the significance of the teachings of Jesus: The God of Jesus is not like the God of Moses but is a God of infinite love, mercy, and understanding. Paul believes that this message needs to be given to the world and he is just the one to do it.

His Roman-Catholic faith has been an enduring part of the life and personality of William Buckley, Jr. Now, for the first time since his ground breaking God and the Man at Yale he has written a book about faith--his own. Nearer, My God, An Autobiography of Faith is William Buckley's superbly written story of his life seen through his abiding love for the Catholic Church, a love instilled in him from childhood. He reminisces about his school days in England, his family, the affect the Lunn/Knox dialogue had on him, and examines many aspects of Catholicism and its theology, doctrine and liturgy and on the way discourses about Lourdes, the vernacular mass, the Church and the State, the Crucifixion, the priesthood, contraception as well as the many people who have assisted him on his life's journey. A remarkable, revealing book about one man and his faith.

This book is a follow-up to the author’s previous one which revealed the underlying, but veiled, symbolism in the Wizard of Oz. His suggestion regarding the connection between Emerald City and the Catholic Church was not well received. Even more objectionable to many was his assertion that the powerless phony wizard, that “Whiz of a wiz,” is a direct analogy to the God of the Old Testament. These chapters will serve as a guided tour of the “spiritual nooks and crannies” of Holy Scripture. These nooks have been carefully ignored and side-stepped by theologians for a very long time. Those willing to start from a spiritual blank slate and step forward with an open mind will be shocked to their core by what they discover in the many never discussed nooks. While many have claimed to reveal the “secrets” of the Mother Church, you will find here that her biggest secrets have been hidden in plain sight all along. Reassessing our most fundamental assumptions about our deepest and longest cherished core beliefs requires real courage and even a willingness to endure ridicule. When Dorothy pulled back the green curtain, she was changed forever – for the better. It is the author’s sincere belief that everyone who walks the Yellow Brick Road (i.e. the Spiritual Path) must eventually summon the courage to look behind the mysterious veil that separates us from our real world wizard. Most of what follows is not pleasant or easy reading but all of it comes right out of the pages of Holy Scripture itself.

There are only a handful of modern-day believers who have had as lasting an impact on the world as Bill Bright, who founded Campus Crusade for Christ in 1951 with his wife, Vonette. In My Life Is Not My Own, written before his death in 2003, Dr. Bright contends that his kingdom victories had little to do with his own excellence and everything to do with becoming a "royal slave" to the King of kings. In this challenging yet encouraging account of his journey toward total surrender to Christ, Dr. Bright examines a perspective common to first-century Christians: The earliest believers did not see themselves as God's hired servants or as temporary slaves who could work off their debts and go free; instead, they viewed themselves as "royal slaves," permanent members in God's household, under his authority, and called to his business. Readers will be dared, by the biblical revelation and by Dr. Bright's personal story, to make the ultimate choice and become slaves of Jesus Christ.
