This lexicon provides a condensed survey of over 850 prominent personalities of Slovakia, from ancient times to the present who have played a visible role in all the various spheres of creative work, including artistic, scientific, literary, economic and sociopolitical. First published in Slovak under the title Reprezentacny Biograficky Lexikon Slovenska by Matica Slovenska in 1999. This English translation is also a collaborative work co-published by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, Inc. and Matica Slovenska. Each entry includes diacritical marks. This book is the first biographical dictionary in English of prominent Slovaks. Besides such entries as banker Michal Bosak, cononized saint Andrej Svorad, music composer Alexander Albrecht, inventor Jozef Murgas, filmmaking pioneers Jan Kadar and Daniel Siakel, and artist Andy Warhol, there are over 850 other Slovaks who have contributed through their art, technology, and poetry to the amelioration of the human condition and to the enrichment of world civilization and culture.
This delightful collection makes the rich but little-known Slovak folk culture available for English-language readers. Most of the fifty tales assembled here from the collections of folklorist Pavol Dobsinsky are translated into English for the first time. The poetic qualities of the originals have been carefully preserved. The general reader will enjoy these tales immensely, and students will find an insightful introduction to the genres of the folktale and the specifics of Slovak tales. For expert readers, all of the tales have been classified according to the Aarne-Thompson index, and many include short commentaries that draw on the work of Viera Gasparikova.
Following the enlargement of the European Union in May 2004, Roma (or gypsies) are now the largest minority group in Europe. They are also one of the poorest and most vulnerable groups, living mainly in Central and Eastern Europe, suffering poverty levels as high as ten times that found within majority populations. The lack of information about the living conditions and needs of Roma people compound these stark gaps in human development outcomes. This publication, prepared for a conference held in Budapest, Hungary in June 2003, brings together original sociological research, evaluations of programme initiatives, and the first comparative cross-country household survey on ethnicity and poverty. It finds that Roma poverty is multi-faceted and can only be addressed by a inclusive policy approach which respects their diversity.
