The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Age of Innocence explores the supernatural and other unknowns in six short stories. The acclaimed Gilded Age author travels around the world and into the unknown with these six tales. After recovering from a bad fever in a Swiss sanitorium, an American pays a social call to a friend’s lonely sister on the coast of Brittany, but his journey takes a terrifying turn in “Miss Mary Pask.” A wealthy resident of a small Massachusetts town hides a sinister secret inside his home and it’s piqued the interest of his neighbors in “The Young Gentlemen.” A Massachusetts farmer’s wife calls in help when her husband is visited by his dead ex-lover in “Bewitched.” Death, doubt, and distrust blossom in the deserts of Morocco at an American Baptist mission in “The Seed of Faith.” An American author working on his next book heads to Paris to speak with his subject’s late wife in “The Temperate Zone.” Recovering from serious illness, an American professor heads to the south of France, searching for quiet and seclusion in “Velvet Ear-Pads.” Inspired by the author’s own global travels, Here and Beyond is a mix of ghost stories, character studies, and social drama. It was originally published in 1926.

The tale contained within these pages is a true story about my life and prayer. Prayer is so powerful, people dont understand it. You have to know how to pray. Some people pray so fast that it is just words coming out of their mouth. I find that this is not the way to communicate with God. Pray from your heart and soul. Pray to God as if you were talking to your son or daughter, or someone you love. Talk from the heart when you want them to understand you love them. God is the same way. Be quiet and open up your heart when talking to the Lord. You will soon find out that your prayers are getting through. If I pray to Mary, I pray the same way, not just words coming out real fast. Even if I pray to a saint, I pray the same way, from my heart and soul. I feel as though people only pray to God when they want something, like a bigger home or new car. They never thank God for what they have. I believe tragedy brings us closer to God. Most people feel that praying to God and asking for something will get them instant gratification.

Hearing loss doesn’t come with an operating manual—until now. If you have hearing loss, you already know that the conventional approach to treatment is focused on hearing-aid technology. Without a handbook to help you figure out how to actually live with it, you’ve likely been getting by on information pieced together from various sources—and yet, communication often seems incomplete and unsatisfying. What’s missing from this hearing care model is the big picture—a real-life illustration of how hearing loss, its emotions, and its barriers affect every corner of your life. Now, hearing-health advocates, consultants, and speakers Shari Eberts and Gael Hannan offer a new skills-based approach to hearing loss that is centered not on hearing better, but on communicating better. With honesty and humor, they share their own hearing loss journeys, and outline invaluable insights, strategies, and workarounds to help you engage with the world and be heard. You’ll gain tips for navigating all areas impacted by hearing loss, including relationships, work, technology; strategies for adopting a new, empowering mindset towards your hearing loss; and communication behaviors that can make almost any listening situation manageable. Informed by the lived experiences of thousands of people living with hearing loss, and corroborated by hearing science, technological advances, and modern hearing-care principles, Hear & Beyond offers a new way forward to greater connection and engagement—whether you’re new to hearing loss or have been living with it for a long time. Hearing loss is just one aspect of who you are, among many others. You may have hearing loss, but it doesn’t have to have you.

The next-generation Stone Butch Blues—a contemporary trans memoir of gender awakening, first love, and self-discovery that “invites readers to view gender not as a binary or a spectrum but as an infinitely beautiful ‘kaleidoscope’” (Bust Magazine). Ambitious, sporty, feminine “capital-L lesbians” had been Nina Krieger’s type. For friends that is. She hadn’t dated in 7 years, a period of non-stop traveling—searching for what, or avoiding what, she didn’t know. When she lands in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood, her roommates introduce her to a whole new world, full of people who identify as queer, who modify their bodies and blur the line between woman and man, who defy everything Nina thought she knew about gender and identity. Despite herself, Nina is drawn to the people she once considered freaks, and before long, she is forging a path that is neither man nor woman, here nor there. This candid and humorous memoir of gender awakening brings readers into the world of the next generation of transgender warriors and tells a classic tale of first love and self-discovery.
