For decades the health of children and adolescents has been a topic of interest in all parts of Europe. And there is quite a consensus that schools are the most appropriate setting to promote health. Childhood and adolescence constitute key stages for learning and adopting a health-related and active lifestyle which includes physical activity and sports. The book describes a new approach to enhance students' health awareness through experimental learning settings in P.E. class, cross-subject teaching, and project work. Teaching health topics requires a pedagogical and didactical framework based on the concept of health literacy and interdisciplinary research discussed by the authors. Teaching examples to improve students' health knowledge, health competencies and skills as well as health behaviour and habits at school implicates a new teaching structure presented in the book.

This work is a critical reflection on the state of health promotion effectiveness in practice around the world. It examines the meaning of health promotion from regional perspectives, and explores regional strengths and weaknesses in demonstrating effectiveness. The book goes on to consider issues in public health such as tobacco, mental health, obesity, urbanization, war, and social determinants in order to assess the role of effectiveness, and to examine methodologies for demonstrating effectiveness. Finally, the book looks at questions over the effectiveness of health promotion – the debate about the relationship between evidence, impact, and outcomes.

The narratives of the children and young people, school teachers and school leaders, parents and carers, policy makers and service managers, and mental health workers and professionals, presented in this book, should provide an invaluable resource for all those involved in mental health promotion in school. The insights drawn from these direct field experiences may help to inform policy and good practice and serve as an inspiration to schools in their efforts to introduce and promote mental health for their communities. Most of the chapters present original research carried out in schools, services, universities and other contexts across different cultures. Through various qualitative studies carried out in different cultural contexts, Mental Health Promotion in Schools provides a platform for children, teachers, school leaders, parents, professionals, policy makers and teacher educators, to express their views on what works and does not work in mental health promotion in school. In our continued quest for evidence based research, we may tend to underestimate the value and significance of capturing the views and experiences of those most directly involved in mental health promotion, such as children and young people, school teachers and parents/carers, in seeking to enhance policy and practice in the area. This book should be of particular interest to those involved in mental health promotion in school at practice, training and research levels and we are sure that among these chapters, they will discover many new and stimulating insights into the promotion of mental health in such complex systems as schools. “This is a timely book since mental health difficulties among children and young people are on the increase across the world. The editors, Carmel Cefai and Paul Cooper, are passionate about the crucial role to be played by schools in creating safe spaces in which to learn, develop and socialise. They have spent many years in the development of creative initiatives for the promotion of emotional health and well-being amongst young people. The editors bring an international perspective to the issue of mental health and youth and show how important it is to collaborate and share expertise and knowledge. Cefai and Cooper have assembled an impressive range of authors to share their knowledge and to show how initiatives can be adapted to a range of cultural contexts.” – Helen Cowie, Professor, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey, UK

Under the UK Labour Government (1997-2001) there have been clear signs of a willingness to revive the 'pastoral' curriculum in schools and to develop stronger links between the health and eductaion sectors. This book, based on empirical work undertaken in England and throughout Europe, explores such government policy and in particular the development of the health promoting school. The authors provide a detailed examination of the health promoting school movement in Europe, including application of concepts, policies, research and practice to the National Healthy Schools Standards in England. A whole school approach to the promotion of health, well-being and educational achievement is taken throughout the book. This approach includes analysis of such subjects and issues as: personal, social and health education; citizenship; environmental education; democracy; self-esteem; social capital and empowerment. The Health Promoting School: Policy, Research and Practice is a timely publication that will serve to inform the practice of teachers in schools and higher education, school management, student teachers and health professionals, health promotion and public health specialists.

In addition to the role of educating future citizens, schools today respond to other social needs, especially to help promote health. The school, in fact, is a unique place to intercept the ways of thinking of children, adolescents and young adults. Very often, however, the school attaches great social responsibility without adequate support to achieve it. From this comes the need to provide educational resources to the roles and responsibilities in order to address the issues that the company asks them to deal with and that the issues of health and education are anointed synergistically. The present work aims to create a link between the promotion of health and school, describing in the first part, the international reference standards, the various theoretical approaches that exist today, and the evolution of the various models of intervention: from the bio-medical to the bio-psycho-social to interactive-dialogical. The second part, after having carried out a historical analysis of some of the themes in the last decade which have resulted in a particularly difficult management of the school (smoking, bullying, delinquency, intercultural) presents some methodological guidelines designed to intervene at the operational level, for the benefit of school leaders, teachers, health workers, parents, psychologists and educators.
