This experiment investigated the effect of peer-reference-group salience on the judged importance of specified values using a sample of 143 male and female African-American high school seniors. In half the cases students first judged the importance of these values to themselves and then judged the importance of these values to their friends. In the rest of the cases students first judged the importance of the values to their friends and then judged the importance of the values to themselves. Students who gave their own judgments in second position (and thus had a chance to think about these friends and their values before indicating their own judgments) gave own judgments that were closer to the judgments they attributed to their friends than did those who gave their own judgments first (p less than .001). Students attributed to their friends a level of interest in joining the military that was similar to their own, but the peer-salience variable seemed not to have an effect. An unpredicted finding was that neighborhood socioeconomic status was negatively correlated (r equal to -.43 p less than .001) with the absolute difference between own and attributed likelihood of joining the military, although it was uncorrelated (ps les than .05) (a) with the subject's own likelihood of joining, (b) with the likelihood they attributed to their friends, and (c) with the arithmetic difference between these two values.

It is a platitude that most people, as they say, 'work to live' rather than 'live to work.' And in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, work weeks have expanded and the divide between work time and personal time has significantly blurred due to innovations in such things as electronic communications. Concerns over the value of work in our lives, as well as with the balance or use of time between work and leisure, confront most people in contemporary society. Discussions over the values of time, leisure, and work are directly related to the time-honored question of what makes a life good. And this question is of particular interest to philosophers, especially ethicists. In this volume, leading scholars address a range of value considerations related to peoples' thoughts and practices around time utilization, leisure, and work with masterful insight. In addressing various practical issues, these scholars demonstrate the timeless relevance and practical import of Philosophy to human lived experience.

This book will make a first contribution to identify the gaps in current practices and provide alternative mechanisms to conceptualize professionalism that is reflective of changing requirements, culture, and demographics of the contemporary military force. The military profession promotes the development, sustainment, and embodiment of ethos, which guides conduct across operational contexts, from times of national and international crises and security challenges (e.g., war, natural disasters, and peace support operations). It is imperative for military leaders to understand how ethos and doctrine shape professional frameworks, which guide the conduct of military members.
