Why has comprehension instruction become so complex? Sharon Taberski cuts through the pressurized, strategy-overloaded, fluency-crazed atmosphere surrounding reading instruction to lay out the reading and writing workshop practices that are most effective in developing readers in the primary grades. She shares the daily how-tos needed to sustain a literacy block that engages children in authentic reading and writing practices including dozens of effective practices that illustrate amazing ways to organize instructional and independent reading for kids including: letter and sound searches that improve students' word accuracy and fluency companion books bags that develop their confidence and comprehension strategy sheets that make children's thinking about text concrete a Putting Our Strategies to Work Board that enables students to reflect on and discuss the meta-cognitive strategies they're using Idea Books and Ta-da Publishing Books that help children get inside the reading and writing process and see how each feeds the other. Two Options for dynamic DVD-based staff development: for your workshop or PLC, the Lessons from the Ground Up DVD features 105-minutes of video clips of Sharon in the classroom, modeling effective ways to develop comprehension plus a 64-page facilitator's guide supports the DVD, lesson by lesson. A revolutionary reappraisal of how to educate our children and young people by Ken Robinson, the New York Times bestselling author of The Element and Finding Your Element. Ken Robinson is one of the world’s most influential voices in education, and his 2006 TED Talk on the subject is the most viewed in the organization’s history. Now, the internationally recognized leader on creativity and human potential focuses on one of the most critical issues of our time: how to transform the nation’s troubled educational system. At a time when standardized testing businesses are raking in huge profits, when many schools are struggling, and students and educators everywhere are suffering under the strain, Robinson points the way forward. He argues for an end to our outmoded industrial educational system and proposes a highly personalized, organic approach that draws on today’s unprecedented technological and professional resources to engage all students, develop their love of learning, and enable them to face the real challenges of the twenty-first century. Filled with anecdotes, observations and recommendations from professionals on the front line of transformative education, case histories, and groundbreaking research—and written with Robinson’s trademark wit and engaging style—Creative Schools will inspire teachers, parents, and policy makers alike to rethink the real nature and purpose of education.

Early literacy instruction typically emphasizes foundational skills--often at the expense of engaging young children in reading and supporting their comprehension of different types of texts. This book explains the essential elements of comprehension and shares a wealth of classroom-tested instructional practices. It presents developmentally informed strategies for scaffolding comprehension skills, using content to promote engagement, and implementing high-level discussions and writing tasks. Ways to teach and assess English learners and other diverse students are highlighted throughout. The book features explicit links to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as well as helpful reproducible forms. Purchasers get access to a Web page where they can download and print the reproducible materials in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.

Teaching English language arts at grades K-5 is both a science and an art. Educators must teach literacy skills and content with best practices, while also keeping focus on each student's individual needs. They are challenged to monitor students working independently while also conducting small group instruction. And they must focus on providing differentiated support with a rather complicated text. With increased attention to rigor, requirements, and personalized instruction, it can be a challenge to make sure all students are receiving instruction that is just right. Comprehensive Literacy Basics: An Anthology by Capstone Professional contains useful tips to support educators. Chapters focus on each part of the literacy and language arts block, including whole group, small group, writing, and differentiation. A collection of expert authors specializing in literacy and language arts instruction contributed chapters to the book. The quick tips and suggestions within will reinforce current practices while providing an invaluable go-to reference. FAMIS #902792539

The book starts with a completely fresh perspective on introduction to signals and continues to dealing with complex numbers without any complicated mathematics. The only skills you require are addition, multiplication and knowing what cos and sin are! The topics of discrete domains - both time and frequency - are explained in an intuitive manner such that traveling between the two through Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) becomes quite natural. Furthermore, the concepts needed to implement modern digital communication systems such as convolution, filters and multirate signal processing are illustrated through the help of beautiful figures. Next, the book demystifies modulation and demodulation in a way easy to grasp even for a non-technical reader. The focus is on linear modulations, particularly Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM), Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and Phase Shift Keying (PSK). Matched filtering is clarified in time, frequency and mathematical details in a story-like development. In addition, the topic of pulse shape filtering is covered in a depth and from angles never described anywhere before. The book continues with stethoscopes of a communication system, namely eye diagrams and scatter plots and towards the error rates of various modulation schemes along with the energy scaling factors of respective blocks. Finally, their spectral efficiencies are described taking into account the bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio and data rates. This text is a simple way for you to enter at the beginner level and make your way up to wireless system design. Mathematics is included at a school level. I rely more on visualizing equations through beautiful figures. Therefore, you will encounter numerous figures throughout the text with logical and intuitive explanations. But you will not encounter any integrals, probability theory and detection/estimation theory. You will not even find any e or j of complex numbers either. The most complicated notation I have used is "sum everything from N1 to N2."
