Charlie the Caterpillar was born out of a conversation that my wife (Lesley Gutman) and daughter (Riley Claire Gutman) had about how cool it would be to write a book about a caterpillar trying on fashion inside of its cocoon. I kept saying they should write about it ... and thus Charlie was born. Charlie is so much more interesting than Andy Gutman, who is simply of average height, maybe a few pounds overweight, and just some boring businessman! As Charlie the Caterpillar meets one group of animals after another playing together and having fun, he asks if he can join in. But each time he's told not welcome -- because he's ugly. As winter approaches, Charlie spins himself a cocoon. When spring arrives, the cocoon opens and out comes Charlie -- now a beautiful butterfly. Everyone wants him to be part of their group. But Charlie puts these fair-weather friends properly in their place in this heartwarming story about the meaning of true friendship.
When Charlie first crawls out of his egg, all he wants to do is be a butterfly. While most butterflies know how long it takes to change from a caterpillar into a butterfly, Charlie was not born with this patience! But, as he eats and grows, his mother reminds him that he does have this important skill, the bottom-line of which is that all good things come to those who wait!
