Influenced by news reports of young children brutalized by their parents, most of us see the role of child services as the prevention of severe physical abuse. But as Tina Lee shows in Catching a Case, most child welfare cases revolve around often ill-founded charges of neglect, and the parents swept into the system are generally struggling but loving, fighting to raise their children in the face of crushing poverty, violent crime, poor housing, lack of childcare, and failing schools. Lee explored the child welfare system in New York City, observing family courts, interviewing parents and following them through the system, asking caseworkers for descriptions of their work and their decision-making processes, and discussing cases with attorneys on all sides. What she discovered about the system is troubling. Lee reveals that, in the face of draconian budget cuts and a political climate that blames the poor for their own poverty, child welfare practices have become punitive, focused on removing children from their families and on parental compliance with rules. Rather than provide needed help for families, case workers often hold parents to standards almost impossible for working-class and poor parents to meet. For instance, parents can be accused of neglect for providing inadequate childcare or housing even when they cannot afford anything better. In many cases, child welfare exacerbates family problems and sometimes drives parents further into poverty while the family court system does little to protect their rights. Catching a Case is a much-needed wake-up call to improve the child welfare system, and to offer more comprehensive social services that will allow all children to thrive.

Catching a Russian Spy is the story of the FBI's investigation of Aldrich Ames, CIA agent who turned Russian spy, and the agent who helped bring him to justice. Aldrich H. "Rick" Ames was a 31-year veteran of the CIA. He was also a Russian spy. By the time Ames was arrested in 1994, he had betrayed the identities of dozens and caused the deaths of ten agents. The notorious KGB (and later the Russian intelligence service, SVR) paid him millions of dollars. Agent Leslie G. “Les” Wiser, Jr. ran the FBI's Nightmover investigation tasked with uncovering a mole in the CIA. The team worked night and day to collect evidence—sneaking into Ames' home, hiding a homing beacon in his Jaguar, and installing a video camera above his desk. But the spy kept one step ahead, even after agents followed him to Bogota, Colombia. In a crazy twist, the FBI would score its biggest clue from inside Ames' garbage can. At the time of his arrest on February 21, 1994, he had compromised more highly-classified CIA assets than any other agent in history. Go behind the scences of some of the FBI's most interesting cases in award-winning journalist Bryan Denson's FBI Files series, featuring the investigations of the Unabomber, al-Qaeda member Mohamed Mohamud, and Michael Young's diamong theft ring. Each book includes photographs, a glossary, a note from the author, and other detailed backmatter on the subject of the investigation.

NYT EDITOR'S CHOICE • WASHINGTON POST BEST NONFICTION OF 2023 • FROM THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED AUTHOR OF HIGH-RISERS comes a groundbreaking and honest investigation into the crisis of the American criminal justice system–through the lens of parole. Perfect for fans of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow and Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy “Correction ranks among the very best books on life inside and outside of prison I have ever read." ―Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted “Correction provides a revelatory lens for examining mass incarceration." –The Washington Post A Most Anticipated Book of 2023: Chicago Review of Books, The Chicago Tribune, The Next Big Idea Club The United States, alone, locks up a quarter of the world’s incarcerated people. And yet apart from clichés—paying a debt to society; you do the crime, you do the time—there is little sense collectively in America what constitutes retribution or atonement. We don’t actually know why we punish. Ben Austen’s powerful exploration offers a behind-the-scenes look at the process of parole. Told through the portraits of two men imprisoned for murder, and the parole board that holds their freedom in the balance, Austen’s unflinching storytelling forces us to reckon with some of the most profound questions underlying the country’s values around crime and punishment. What must someone who commits a terrible act do to get a second chance? What does incarceration seek to accomplish? An illuminating work of narrative nonfiction, Correction challenges us to consider for ourselves why and who we punish–and how we might find a way out of an era of mass imprisonment.

I just got sacked. I'm permanently drunk. I have cancer. I'm inescapably gay. I was hit by a bus. And, incidentally, I've fallen in love with a stranger whose life I saved. My name is Andrew Thomas, newly-unemployed Sherlock Holmes scholar, and I don't know how to do any of this. I know only Holmes can help me untangle this madness, and he isn't real. Except he absolutely appeared in my house, told me I'm in love with a man I just met, and then in a fit of pique I sent him away. Maybe he's a hallucination or a specter or a ghost (pick one?), but now I desperately need Holmes' help. So to find the answer to my case and the man of my dreams, I'm chasing a fictional character through London with my very own Watson (hi Mina). Business as usual.

Written by world renowned practitioners of the Griffiths Scales of Child Development, Third Edition (Griffiths III), this volume presents individual case studies to assist practitioners and trainees in making full use the Griffiths III to comprehensively assess a child's development. Practitioners will learn about tracking and monitoring development and how to measure the impact of intervention – creating more informed decisions about the management and placement of the child. Two introductory chapters examine the Griffiths III as a child development assessment tool, looking in detail at its psychometric properties and how to use the test to interpret, plan, and understand a child's performance as well as the child's strengths and challenges. Grouped according to five color zones for ease of reading, 15 case studies are presented for children with a wide range of abilities and from 10 different countries. The book is based on four conceptual frameworks: the ICF-CY, ESSENCE, the link between function and intervention, and Ruth Griffith's Avenues of Learning theory. Throughout the examples, the perspective of the child is placed at the center and their voices are included in the plans described. Key concepts, points of importance, and questions for the reader are included at the end of each chapter. The book is aimed at practitioners of the Griffiths III, but it is also of interest to a wider range of developmental practitioners, including child psychologists, child psychiatrists, pediatricians, and child psychotherapists.
