This book uses Conversation Analysis methodology to analyze rhetorical and other questions that are designed to convey assertions, rather than seek new information. It shows how these question sequences unfold interactionally in naturally-occurring talk in a variety of settings, e.g., friends arguing over the phone, parents disciplining children, news interviews, and second language writing conferences. The questions are used across these widely different contexts to perform a number of related social actions such as accusations, challenges to prior turns, and complaints. Those used in institution settings, such as teacher-student conferences, orient to institutional norms and roles and can help accomplish institutional goals, e.g., eliciting student error correction. Both the interactional context in which these questions are embedded and the known epistemic authority of the questioner play a role in our understanding of these questions, i.e., what social actions the question is accomplishing in a particular interaction.

Rhetoric and stylistics deal with successful human communication and the arrangement of language in texts. As the most influential of all language-related disciplines, rhetoric has an ancient tradition and is presently experiencing a remarkable revival. Stylistics analyzes the structures of texts with regard to their semantic potential and their function in the life of the individual and in society. The handbook offers surveys of theoretical approaches, forms of linguistic practice and practical contexts from antiquity to the present.

Empiricism favors the visual over the verbal, the literal over the rhetorical, the static over the temporal: This is the standard charge leveled by literary theorists and writers. It is, Jules David Law demonstrates, remarkably misguided. His ambitious and challenging book explores the interplay of language and visual perception at the heart of empiricism. A re-evaluation of the British empiricist tradition from the perspective of contemporary literary theory, it also offers a sustained challenge to theory itself. In failing to grasp the issues confronting early empiricist writers or to be fully aware of their rhetorical strategies, Law says, theory has defined itself needlessly in opposition to empiricism. -- Description from http://www.booktopia.com.au (April 19, 2012).

Focused on the centrist rhetoric of President Bill Clinton, Centrist Rhetoric explores questions about the basic nature and function of pleas to transcend partisan division. Using close textual analysis in the context of a broader theoretical argument about rhetoric, democracy, and transcendence, this book promises a fresh approach to dealing with the contradictions inherent to using the center as a political metaphor.
