Bent But Not Broken is a heartfelt journey of a girl and her family as they navigate the healthcare system from diagnosis to surgery and beyond. Follow them as they use their own words in blog posts and through an emotional and gripping narrative that puts you right by their side. All the ups, downs, challenges, and successes of the experience changed their lives and taught them that compassion and love build strong communities, even stronger families, and that true strength comes from the most unlikely sources. For the Butters family, the punch that knocked the wind out of them was a diagnosis of severe idiopathic scoliosis for their eleven-year-old daughter Avery. The only viable treatment option was spinal fusion surgery. It was a terrifying prospect to stare down. Frustrated with the lack of information on what the family would actually experience, Avery's mother, Jodi, started a family blog. It was there that Avery, Jodi, and Andrew would share their thoughts and experiences about the journey in real time. Jodi was determined that if there were other families searching for this information her family would be able to provide it. When it was all said and done and the blog came to its rightful conclusion, the writer in Andrew felt that since the blog was so successful at spreading the message then surely there were other ways to help spread the word and share lessons that even applied beyond Avery's scoliosis.

My parents sharecropped for many years and owned a corner grocery store where my father bootlegged alcohol for a living. As a child, my brothers would plow many acres of land. They would start at sunup and work until sundown. Most of the time, after plowing the land, they would have to plant the crops. Back then, the crops consisted mostly of cotton. Us girls had to help chop and pick cotton and strawberries. Every year we were kept out of school to work in the fields until all the crops were gathered, and then we would go off to school wearing hand-me-downs. Momma had that look of helplessness again every year when we would hear the owner say to my father either, "You are in the red," or "We just broke even." One thing was for sure: we always had a really good Christmas dinner. We would have a big, fat homegrown roasting hen with cornbread stuffing, homegrown collard greens, okra, and homemade pies. One of Momma's favorites was the lemon pie. We really didn't know we were poor because we never went hungry. In my teens, I was attacked by a young man and feared for my life. After that attack, I started looking for love and acceptance in all the wrong places. These experiences left me Bent but Not Broken. God kept me. 2

In this book you will find experiences of my grandmother, brother, and daughters deaths. How it felt to be one of the first blacks to attend an all-white school, how I was betrayed by my first love. Having to raise my grandchildren, one of them severely autistic, I wrote this book to encourage someone that no matter how bad life gets, God is always there to see you through it. As the title states, I was bent but not broken. Through it all I would not change a thing, because it made me the strong woman that I am today. I give God all the glory! My proceeds from this book will go toward making my grandsons future a happy one. He is seventeen and growing.

I have endured much trauma in my life, but I’m here to say that with a good attitude, things can really make a difference. I’m hoping that sharing my experiences will help you realize that you, too, can TURN YOUR MESS INTO A MESSAGE . . . There is always hope. Bent, Bruised, Abused, but Not Broken: The Susan Dealy Story is a candid account of the author’s often tumultuous life, including her twenty years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces, where she suffered appalling sexual, emotional, and physical abuse, as well as being the victim of several online romance scams that diminished both her finances and her trust. Susan also shares some of her happier moments, such as taking a one-year program at Carver Bible College in Atlanta, Georgia at age forty-five, and a subsequent trip to Nigeria, fulfilling her lifelong dream to do missionary work in Africa. Bent, Bruised, Abused but Not Broken: The Susan Dealy Story also includes information and tips—from Susan and others who fell prey to internet dating deception—so that you can recognize these types of scams and protect yourself. This touching and tragic memoir—also told through poignant poetry—is also a story of inspiration, faith, courage, and hope, with a beautiful message that it is possible to turn your mess into a message.
