Beal and Lewis1 pointed out that in this process several sources of error are introduced. in the first place, the alkaloidal salt may be slightly soluble in the organic solvent. There is also the possibility of the salt being hydrolysed.by'the water present into the free alkaloid ani the acid and in this case the free alkaloid wouli_be reaiily soluble in the solvent giving low results at the end.
