In this new book, Louise teaches boys and girls about the importance of affirmations—the thoughts and words we use in our daily lives that express what we believe to be true. Within these pages, there are wonderful examples of kids turning "negative" thoughts such as worry, anger, and fear into positive words and actions that express joy, happiness, and love. There are also tips that show children how they can apply affirmations to their daily lives. Vibrant illustrations and simple text make these concepts easy to understand for even the youngest child. The purpose of this book is to help you develop a positive mindset to achieve success in all areas of your life. Unfortunately, we are exposed to negative thinking every day...on our jobs, in the media, and in the words and actions of the people we meet. This negative thinking has a profound impact on how we perceive ourselves and what we become. Every truly successful person who discovers his or her inner strength, who achieves great things, does so with a positive frame of mind. A positive mental attitude can be developed and maintained by following the process revealed in this book. Without a doubt, to accomplish any goal you need to develop the proper mindset. Confidence, which is cultivated through applied faith, can be an acquired virtue. It is a well established fact that repetition of thought in the form of daily affirmations or convictions will dramatically increase self-confidence. Upon acquiring the confidence necessary to take actions on your dreams and desires, you are well on the way to accomplishing any goal or fulfilling any mission.

Must we always later regret actions that were wrong for us to perform at the time? Can there ever be good reason to affirm things in the past that we know were unfortunate? In this original work of moral philosophy, R. Jay Wallace shows that the standpoint from which we look back on our lives is shaped by our present attachments-to persons, to the projects that imbue our lives with meaning, and to life itself. Through a distinctive "affirmation dynamic", these attachments commit us to affirming the necessary conditions of their objects. The result is that we are sometimes unable to regret events and circumstances that were originally unjustified or otherwise somehow objectionable. Wallace traces these themes through a range of examples. A teenage girl makes an ill-advised decision to conceive a child - but her love for the child once it has been born makes it impossible for her to regret that earlier decision. The painter Paul Gauguin abandons his family to pursue his true artistic calling (and eventual life project) in Tahiti--which means he cannot truly regret his abdication of familial responsibility. The View from Here offers new interpretations of these classic cases, challenging their treatment by Bernard Williams and others. Another example is the "bourgeois predicament": we are committed to affirming the regrettable social inequalities that make possible the expensive activities that give our lives meaning. Generalizing from such situations, Wallace defends the view that our attachments inevitably commit us to affirming historical conditions that we cannot regard as worthy of being affirmed--a modest form of nihilism.

From the creator of Dilbert and author of Win Bigly, a guide to spotting and avoiding loserthink: sneaky mental habits trapping victims in their own bubbles of reality. If you've been on social media lately, or turned on your TV, you may have noticed a lot of dumb ideas floating around. "We know when history will repeat and when it won't." "We can tell the difference between evidence and coincidences." "The simplest explanation is usually true." Wrong, wrong, and dangerous! If we're not careful, loserthink would have us believe that every Trump supporter is a bigoted racist, addicts should be responsible for fixing the opioid epidemic, and that your relationship fell apart simply because you chewed with your mouth open. Even the smartest people can slip into loserthink's seductive grasp. This book will teach you how to spot and avoid it--and will give you scripts to respond when hollow arguments are being brandished against you, whether by well-intentioned friends, strangers on the internet, or political pundits. You'll also learn how to spot the underlying causes of loserthink, like the inability to get ego out of your decisions, thinking with words instead of reasons, failing to imagine alternative explanations, and making too much of coincidences. Your bubble of reality doesn't have to be a prison. This book will show you how to break free--and, what's more, to be among the most perceptive and respected thinkers in every conversation.

Like many churchgoers, C. Joseph Sprague finds himself in a quandary: he loves the church but often finds himself at odds with its principles and/or practices. What makes his situation unique is that in addition to his role as worshiper, he is a bishop who is charged with the responsibility of leadership. In Affirmations of a Dissenter, Sprague gives readers a composite of affirmation and dissent, of faith and protest. He writes about his trust in and commitment to God's hospitable, unconditional love for all humankind as well as about his discomfort with discernible public trends in religious institutions, particularly United Methodism. The brief chapters of this book cover a variety of topics: biblical literalism; the power of biblical witness; biblical authority as related to homosexuality, divorce, violence, and women; the nature and person of Jesus; hope in the church; leadership; and racism. "When Joe Sprague ponders the Scripture looking at them through the ministry of our Lord, he grabs your attention. Your mind will race; your heart will beat faster as he walks with Jesus into areas of poverty, injustice, war, and human sexuality. You may not always agree, but you will be brought up short by his openness, his integrity, and his sacrificial commitments. He'll make you a braver, more radical Christian."--Richard B. Wilke Bishop in Residence Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas "A candid and clarion call for United Methodism to embrace its theological, biblical, and ethical roots without being ensnared by fearful right-wing 'neoliteralists' or cynical left-wing 'progressives.' Bishop Sprague challenges the church to a future vision of hope, emphasizing the Gospel's mandate of inclusiveness, justice, and nonviolence. A refreshing and stimulating presentation of basically orthodox Christian beliefs, this book is 'must reading' for every Christian yearning for a renewed and relevant church in the 21st century." --Donald E. Messer Warren Professor of Practical Theology and President Emeritus The Iliff School of Theology "United Methodist Bishop Joseph Sprague's book Affirmations of a Dissenter is the bravest statement I've ever read by a UMC bishop on the topics he's writing about. It says some things that urgently need saying in the church." Barbara Wendland in Connections April 2003

In Life-Changing Affirmations, you'll find a spiritual practice that can be done in just minutes a day -- in the shower, on the way to work, while watching a child's soccer game -- and change your life. The 30-day plan promotes a deeper awareness of five key spiritual qualities -- love, intuition, inner wisdom, forgiveness, and service. Each daily affirmation and short meditation focuses on a specific spiritual state such as grace, power, or creativity. "As God created the universe the seed of creation was planted in me. I open my seed of creativity, inviting new ways of living to flow forth. In this moment, I create heaven on earth in me." Following the program brings about changes in the way we handle daily stresses and problems. On days 1 through 5, learn to fuel change. On days 6 through 11, focus on developing an intuitive spiritual practice. The affirmations and meditations for days 12 through 18 help access inner wisdom and the strength to look deeper into our life issues. On days 19 through 24, use the tools of forgiveness. And, on days 25 through 30, focus on using your spiritual energy to serve yourself and others. *A 30-day practice that can be done in minutes anywhere -- and repeated at will.
