Mounting evidence in the last years has demonstrated that self-regulation of brain activity can successfully be achieved by neurofeedback (NF). These methodologies have constituted themselves as new tools for cognitive neuroscience establishing causal links between voluntary brain activations and cognition and behavior, and as potential novel approaches for clinical applications in severe neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, depression, Parkinson´s disease, etc.). Current developments of brain imaging-based neurofeedback include the study of the behavioral modifications and neural reorganization produced by learned regulation of the activity of circumscribed brain regions and neuronal network activations. In a rapidly developing field, many open questions and controversies have arisen, i.e. choosing the proper experimental design, the adequate use of control conditions and subjects, the mechanism of learning involved in brain self-regulation, and the still unexplored potential long-lasting effect on brain reorganization and clinical alleviation, among others. This special issue on self-regulation of the brain of emotion and attention using NF approaches interested authors to report technical and methodological advances, scientific investigations in understanding the relation between brain activity and behaviour using NF, and finally studies developing clinical treatment of emotional and attentional disorders. The editors of this special issue anticipate rapid developments in this emerging field.

After losing touch with his mother due to alcoholism and bad choices, Terry soon found himself following in her footsteps. Coming home from the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) had its many challenges as he remained rebelliously defiant. Soon thereafter he became again truant, experiencing prostitution, gambling, and dealing drugs, clearing a path that leads only to jails, institutions, and death. A near-death experience from a fatal car accident initiated a “paradigm shift,” which forced him into treatment. A love affair between his boss’ wife and himself created new life, but their differences were too much for each other to remain together. Later settling into his first committed relationship came with further unexpected challenges that were unpleasant. Learning a new life of methamphetamine ventures caused another “paradigm shift,” which led him into the underworld of manufacturing illegal controlled substances. After leaving that life behind to seek refuge in the church community that took him to higher places, he was again influenced by the delusion of substance abuse to escape the grip of reality’s natural challenges. He found himself back within the penal system once again, given an opportunity of a lifetime to change his life before it was too late.

Control theories have dominated criminological theory and research since the 1969 publication of Hirschi's seminal work on the social bond. Social control and self-control theorists are unique in suggesting that patterns in criminal behaviors are better explained by variations in social constraints rather than by individual motivational impulses, thus indicating that their main concerns are the explication and clarification of the techniques, processes, and institutions of informal social control. The four major sections of this volume focus on: the similarities and differences among the major contributors to the early developmental stage of social control theory; the central importance of parents, peers, and schools in the creation of informal control mechanisms and their link to crime and delinquency; the theoretical underpinnings of self-control theory, including empirical tests and criticisms; and theoretical integrations of social control and self-control theories with various motivational theories of crime and delinquency.

Drawing on a powerful Native American metaphor to frame this work, E.N. Anderson and Barbara Anderson examine complicity in genocide, stressing that it only through feeding the good wolf that a moral and social order of inclusion and tolerance can be built, while feeding the bad wolf will result in fear, hatred, exclusion, and violence. In Complying with Genocide: The Wolf You Feed, Anderson and Anderson illustrate how everyday frustration and fear, combined with hatred and social othering toward rivals and victims of discrimination, can lead individuals and whole nations to become complicit in genocide. Anderson and Anderson propose powerful actions that can both protect against complicity and create social change, as exemplified from populations recovering from genocidal regimes. This book is recommended for students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, public health, psychology, criminal justice, and political science.
