This book presents a provocative new interpretation of Beyond Good and Evil, arguably Nietzsche's most important work. The problem is that it appears to express merely a loosely connected set of often questionable opinions. Can Nietzsche really be an important philosopher if this is his most important book? The volume offers various considerations of Nietzsche's attempt to connect language to the instinctive activity of the human body. Insanity in individuals is something rare-but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is the rule. Nietzsche's famous work Beyond Good and Evil follows up on the morality ideas presented in his prior publication, Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883), and further challenges the accepted standards previous philosophers held surrounding morality. This nine part work, which includes an entire chapter (Chapter IV) of short aphorisms, has become a mainstay in philosophical thinking.
The preface accuses philosophers of dogmatism, and the first chapter explores this claim. Every great philosophy, Nietzsche asserts, is little more than the personal confession. Philosophers build up complex systems of thought to justify their own assumptions and prejudices. If we can dig these out, we can see what these philosophers value most deeply, and so gain insight into their character. Nietzsche contrasts their dogmatism with the "free spirit" that is not caught up in a particular point of view. He hopes the philosophers of the future will be characterized by such an experimental method, willing to try out any hypothesis, and follow any argument all the way to its conclusion.
