2015 Reprint of 1912 American Edition. Full Facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Contains all original photographs from the original edition. In the first half of the twentieth century Montessori created a progressive system of education for early childhood through adolescence. This book, one of the landmarks in the history of education, describes that system. Based on materials and methods originally instituted to teach mentally challenged students, the techniques proved highly effective with conventional students as well. Techniques Include: Mixed age classrooms, with classrooms for children ages 21/2 or 3 to 6 years old by far the most common; student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options; uninterrupted blocks of work time, ideally three hours; a constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction; specialized educational materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators; freedom of movement within the classroom and a trained Montessori teacher.

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was a pioneering early years educator, who believed passionately that very young children -3 to 6-year-olds- needed a specialized method of teaching. Her methods spread throughout Europe to America and are still in use today in what are now known as Montessori nurseries or kindergartens.

The Montessori Method is an all-encompassing introduction to Dr. Montessori’s popular alternative approach to educating and nurturing children as they develop, written by the Italian physician. The Montessori teaching method focuses on a child’s natural abilities and interests, and encourages hands-on learning. Removing the formality of traditional elements of education, such as examinations, Dr. Montessori’s approach to teaching gives children the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and develop at their own pace. First published in 1912 and featuring original illustrations, this introduction to the method is clear and simple, making it an ideal read for teachers and parents alike. This volume features the following chapters: - How the Lesson Should be Given - Exercises of Practical Life - Nature in Education - Education of the Senses - Intellectual Education - Method for the Teaching of Reading and Writing - Teaching of Numeration: Introduction to Arithmetic

In the period that has elapsed between the publication of the Italian and American editions, I have had, with my pupils, the opportunity to simplify and render more exact certain practical details of the method, and to gather additional observations concerning discipline. The results attest the vitality of the method and the necessity for an [Pg viii]extended scientific collaboration in the near future, and are embodied in two new chapters written for the American edition. I know that my method has been widely spoken of in America, thanks to Mr. S. S. McClure, who has presented it through the pages of his well-known magazine. Indeed, many Americans have already come to Rome for the purpose of observing personally the practical application of the method in my little schools. If, encouraged by this movement, I may express a hope for the future, it is that my work in Rome shall become the centre of an efficient and helpful collaboration. To the Harvard professors who have made my work known in America and to McClure's Magazine, a mere acknowledgment of what I owe them is a barren response; but it is my hope that the method itself, in its effect upon the children of America, may prove an adequate expression of my gratitude. Maria Montessori.
