Authors Note.In the last century a significant event has taken place in the spiritual history of man on the form of Self realization of Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharshi. Many saints got Self realized but Bhagawan's appears to be unique. When Bhagawan got Self realized he is only 16 years of age,not yet under any established spiritual discipline. He never heard the word Brahman but he became Brahman. His death experience is unique in the spiritual history.Actually he underwent physical death at the time of Self realization.During that period the conscious aspect of his mind inquired into what is death. He inquired into it with watchfulness, witnessing, without any interference of thought in the form of preconceived ideas, beliefs, dogmas, ideas of reincarnation etc about the death,so he is in direct contact with the “fact of death”.After inquiring into death,he has gone beyond death, mrutyunjaya. But luckily for all of us the life forc has entered again into his body and he started moving. All this happened in just 20 minutes which never happened so easily in any other saints history.Similar death experiences happened two more times and Bhagawan existentially came to know that his essential nature is Pure conscious being but not body-mind complex as he previously thought to be.Since then he established as Brahman and lived life accordingly. He diagnosed the root cause of suffering is body identity through “I-am-the-body-idea”.He found self-inquiry is the best and direct method to root out that identity with the body. All spiritual disciplines keep the “me” which is the source of misery and they go on “doing” something to attain the Self.In self-inquiry the very existence of me is questioned and scrutinized. So “me” is not used to do self-inquiry.In Upadesa saram in 17th sutra Bhagawan said when we set out find where is the “me”,it will be found non-existent.(Naiva Manasam). So self-inquiry is a scientific method done with awareness about nature, structure, style of functioning of the “me”.So self-inquiry does not belong to any religion and can be done by any sincre truth seeker irrespective of his background of what religion, belief, dogma he belongs to.So self-inquiry is an inquiry into the nature of impediments which are obstructing the discovery of inner Self, the immeasurable, that which is timeless and so eternal. In this book the author gives a brief biography of Bhagawan, his death experience in his own words, his original “Who-am-I” text, and the observations of the author on self-inquiry which may be useful for those who are doing self-inquiry in the light of Bhagawan.Bhagawan is such a great saint he conferred Self knowledge to a cow which we usually hear in ancient Puranas. His equanimity towards all beings is quite significant. The way he died is also unique. After his leaving the body,a blue light arose from his body, went high up in the sky like a meteor and finally merged in the holy mountain of Arunachala. Such event happened only in the case of Lord Krishna and Manikya Vachakar. For the author he is a living guru for him because “presence” of Bhagawan is palpable.

This is an original work. Our nature is Self. It need not be acquired. We have to find the blocks, degenerating factors that interfere with natural effulgence of Self.If such Self knowledge is not there human thinking and so action is limited and perverted. This is quite obvious in daily life.In self-inquiry we identify the factors that interfere with the natural revelation of the Self. With Self knowledge thinking and action will be there but without a center. In contrast in self-ignorance we think and act from a center and so action is incomplete which leads to misery, violence, sorrow, anxiety, fear, ambition, greed. So everybody needs self-inquiry in which there is insight into the structure and function of ego and why its action is incomplete which necessarily leads to misery. As insight is from our total being the action of insight is instantaneous and total in timeless dimension. With that we stop self centered activity and start doing spontaneous activity in which there is freedom and so the action is complete. As life is action and if such action is complete and we are one with the existence and we function from intelligence of existence and not from cunning intelligence of ego.

Humanity is in dark state of Self-ignorance.Ego is a product of this Self-ignorant dark state and the god, religion, poetry, art, painting it creates are all outcome of this darkness. The culture of human society, its education, family system, beliefs, dogmas all add to this metaphysical sleep and keeps the human in darkness causing lot of misery to him.Because ego state is a dark state we have to bring in light of "awareness" to know how the the ego is working and causing suffering to humanity. For this self-inquiry is the direct method and this book deals with that study of self.self-inquiry demands psychological energy. But the energy is destroyed, is wasted when one is in conflict. So when there is the understanding of the whole process of conflict, there is the ending of conflict, there is abundance of energy. Then you can proceed, tearing down the house that you have built throughout the centuries and that has no meaning at all.You know, to destroy is to create. We must destroy the psychological, the unconscious and the conscious defenses, securities that one has built up rationally, individually, deeply, and superficially. We must tear through all that to be utterly defenseless, because you must be defenseless to love and have affection. Then you see and understand ambition, authority; and you begin to see when authority is necessary and at what level -the authority of the policeman and no more. Then there is no authority of learning, no authority of knowledge, no authority of capacity, no authority that function assumes and which becomes status. To understand all authority -of the gurus, of the Masters, and others- requires a very sharp mind, a clear brain, not a muddy brain, not a dull brain. Is there an action not of desire? If we ask such a question, and we rarely do, one can probe, without any motive, to find an action which is of intelligence. The action of desire is not intelligent; it leads to all kinds of problems and issues. Is there an action of intelligence? One must always be somewhat skeptical in these matters; doubt is an extraordinary factor of purification of the brain, of the heart. Doubt, carefully measured out, brings great clarity, freedom. In the Eastern religions, to doubt, to question, is one of the necessities for finding truth, but in the religious culture of Western civilization, doubt is an abomination of the devil. But in freedom, in an action that is not of desire, there must be the sparkle of doubt. When one actually sees, not theoretically nor verbally, that the action of desire is corrupt, distorted, the very perception is the beginning of that intelligence from which action is totally different. That is, to see the false as the false, the truth in the false, and truth as truth. Such perception is that quality of intelligence which is neither yours nor mine, which then acts. That action has no distortion, no remorse. It doesn't leave a mark, a footprint on the sands of time. That intelligence cannot be unless there is great compassion, love, if you will. There cannot be compassion if the activities of thought are anchored in any one particular ideology or faith, or attached to a symbol or to a person. There must be freedom to be compassionate. And where there is that flame, that very flame is the movement of intelligence.

Become more and more aware of the precariousness of life.Learn how to live by being responsible. As awareness increases mind is filled with awareness and you act from awareness. When you act from awareness, the action is complete without any hangover. Then you will know what it is to be free even while acting.Action with motive is binding because it is directed, it is incomplete because you act from the ego and incomplete action leaves a residue of experience which knocks your door for resolution.God is an invention of man for his comfort, just as religion is also an invention of man. All religions keep you in ignorance because religion is created by thought. You must negate all thought created things like god, religion if you are serious to find the truth. This negation comes out of diligent understanding but negation is not intellectual. Then your mind is empty of beliefs, dogma, nationality, caste, creed, race religion etc and has the capacity to comprehend that which is ultimate truth that can never be touched by thought.Through negation of false you touch what is true, so in search for truth diligent negation is the most positive act. Belief, dogma, conformity, imitation are the most negative acts possible. Get rid of them first. You are already the truth, so you have to negate the ego smoke that is formed over the mirror of consciousness from many centuries during evolution. In psychological inquiry never depend on anybody as authority be it a savior, book, scripture, guru. Death is knocking at your door; it can happen at any time. Life is momentary, a soap bubble, just a pin prick and it is gone forever. How can you remain unaware? Bring awareness to each act. If you take life for granted and think you are going to live forever you remain unaware and vegetate.

Instinctual response of any human being issecurity. So he tries to hind security in identity with family, property, group, caste, nation, belief systems and religion. But the very identity withall these lead duality, contradiction, conflict, war. One needs physicalsecurity but is there any need to psychological security? The very pursuit ofpsychological security leads to insecurity. Are humans individualpsychologically or is it the creation of thought through condition to createconcept of individualism which leads to so much disorder. Existence has nodoer-ship but action goes on and on. So individualism is against existentialmovement and so there is so many problems when action arises from a individualpsychological center instead of responding from consciousness without a center. So what actually formed to have security and certainty is bringing usinsecurity and uncertainty because it is bringing conflict along with it. Fromphysical security we turn to psychological security. Action born out ofpsychological center is ibviously incomplete because the center itself islimited and so such action is bound to lead to conflict. It has a motive behindit. Spontaneous action has no motive and so there is no eye on fruit of actionand so “doer” who is the fundamental factor of separation between human beingsis not born and such action is complete. Spontaneous action is pro-existentialand such action never leads to conflict and contradiction. Action born out ofpsychological center is anti-existential and so is bound to produce conflict.

The original face of human is consciousness which is formless. He is expected to respond spontaneously to the life situation. But we respond according to an idea, dogma, which is reaction rather than response. All faces are borrowed and we have many faces, many personalities. Human is polypsychic, he behaves in one way in office with boss, he behave differently with wife and children and he behave in totally different manner with other relations in society. We develop multiple masks suitable for various life situations. We are not a holistic, integrated human being. To get rid of false masks we wear and to know who “we really are” we have to do self-inquiry. Why we behave in such erratic way? For me self-inquiry is not episodic and not apart from daily life. To me it is an opportunity to learn to look at fragmentary way of life in which we are living at present and which is resulting in conflict and to avoid it we are escaping in many ways and religious entertainment is one of them bit escapes are no the solution for resolving conflict obviously. Many approach self-inquiry with preconceived ideas by reading some book written by a saint but that is not the right approach. We must admit that we do know how to do self-inquiry on our own. Truth is a living thing and so there can be no path to it and we cannot follow footsteps of other. It is not carrying over what others have practiced. Then only we are free to do self-inquiry with free mind without any belief, dogma, then we are free to flow and swim in self-inquiry. Is self-inquiry divorce from daily life, our conduct, daily activity of being greedy, envy, daily imitative, competitive, conforming spirit, daily sensual, intellectual appetites, so self-inquiry divorce from all that or self-inquiry flows from all that, covers all that, includes all that. Otherwise self-inquiry has no meaning. Trying to do self-inquiry for few minutes and doing mischievous things rest of the day is just a self deception. It is not a self imposed thing to arrive at a point. Some people pray out of confusion but it is a finite expression to attain something. Many feel that there is a path to truth and we can arrive easily by doing self-inquiry. But self-inquiry demands total transformation of thinking process through witnessing by a still mind. Many believe truth is a static and fixed state. We can participate in truth but there is nothing like arriving. Through self-inquiry we will come to know how to participate in truth, so question of arriving does not exist. Does self-inquiry covers whole field of life or totally apart from life? or does it embrace whole field of life. If it does not embrace all that self-inquiry has no meaning. It becomes another escape. The perfume of self-inquiry should pervade my activity, and then only our life becomes orderly. Then self-inquiry is of tremendous significance because it brings radical change in thought-feeling and so action.

Just as science investigates into the matter self-inquiry investigates the human subjectivity. So it is a science. It is nothing to do with organized belief which is religion or dogma or superstation or emotion. It is direct perception of the movement of a mind to a challenge. When we are aware of the movement of the fact, the fact flowers in passive awareness of perception and reveal itself and withers. This is real religiosity. We investigate matter through thought and thought itself is a conditioned matter and we store that information as knowledge in memory cells. Next time we act from that knowledge through thought. Many new things are found even in objective reality during a thought-free perception. Knowledge is never complete because something more can be added always to the existing knowledge and so there can be no complete knowledge about anything and so thought arising from limited knowledge can never be complete. As far as material things are concerned this system works but thought has invaded the psyche and is trying to solve the problems according psychological memory. It created religions, god, beliefs, superstitions; dogmas which cannot solve the present mental problem. To deal with a fact insightful perception is the right instrument. Thought has no place whatsoever to play in psyche. The contents of consciousness are formed because of thought. They must be emptied of mind urgently through silent perception. Silent mind is a living mind. Mind that is filled with thought matter is a dead mind. So in self-inquiry we understand the role of dead past and so it is never allowed to interfere in the investigation of “active present” and so past is kept where it should be and make mind alive, still and sensitive again.
