Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy: Theoretical Developments is a cutting edge examination of the theory behind this popular approach within the cognitive-behavioural tradition. Distinguished practitioners and authors discuss the relevance of: · cross-disciplinary factors affecting REBT · REBT as an intentional therapy · differentiating preferential from exaggerated and musturbatory beliefs in REBT · irrational beliefs as schemata. Thought-provoking presentation of case studies and the latest theory revision give Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy: Theoretical Developments a distinctive slant: a challenging discussion of the approach's openness to revision from within and outside the ranks of REBT, and its implications for the future.

This book contains a selection of the proceedings of the Second Meeting of the European Association for Behaviour Therapy and Modification, and of the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Behavioural Engineering Association. The conference, held at Wexford, Ireland, was attended by 320 delegates from most European countries and North America. In the foreword to the proceedings of the previous European Conference Brengelmann and Tunner commented upon the extension of the basis of behaviour therapy. They pointed out that behaviour therapy had developed from the position in the early days, when treatments were derived by almost literal translation of learning principles to the clinic, to the more modern position where therapies were developed from considerations of the results from all experimental disciplines devoted to the study of both human and animal behaviour. Even a superficial consideration of the breadth of the topics repre sented in this volume will indicate that this trend has continued.

′A delightful volume, with unique style and content. This new edition amply lives up to the authors′ aim of demonstrating a mode of CBT practice that incorporates many exciting developments whilst retaining the reassuring strength of the original parsimonious model.′ Ann Hackmann, Oxford Mindfulness Centre, University of Oxford ′One of the very best introductions to CBT, now enhanced with excellent coverage of new developments.′ Professor Neil Frude, Consultant Clinical Psychologist ′My first choice recommendation for trainee therapists. This outstanding and easy-to-read introduction just got better.′ Peter Simpson, Senior Lecturer in Mental Health, University of Glamorgan In their established guide to contemporary CBT theory and practice, the authors show how therapeutic change takes place across a network of cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning. They explain the central concepts of CBT and illustrate - with numerous case examples - how these can effectively be put into practice at each stage of the therapeutic process. They also explain how the essence of cutting edge ′third wave′ can be integrated into everyday clinical practice. With two new chapters on mindfulness and increasing access to CBT, a wider coverage of client issues, extra case studies and learning resources, and a discussion of recent developments, this book continues to be the ideal companion for those working - or training to work - in the psychological therapies and mental health. Frank Wills is an independent Cognitive Psychotherapist in Bristol and tutor at the University of Wales Newport. Although Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has a well elaborated theoretical background and documented standard therapeutic process, new specific theoretical formulations and genuine techniques seem to continually appear. These new treatment developments in CBT constitute the heart of this book. Leading researchers and clinicians, who are also well established experts in the application of CBT present the extent of their experience, as well as appropriate and state-of-the-art treatment techniques for a variety of specific disorders: * Management of Major Depression, suicidal behaviour and Bipolar Disorder. * Treatment of Anxiety Disorders such as Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. * Application of CBT to Eating Disorder and Personality Disorders, especially Borderline Personality Disorder. * Implementation of CBT with specific populations such as couples and families, children and adolescents. The book focuses on clinical practice and treatment techniques, but avoids a step-by-step approach. Instead it encourages flexibility and integrativity in order to help the practicing clinician become more competent and efficient in applying CBT. Well-known contributors reveal a variety of treatment styles, and case examples and treatment transcripts are used to show how theoretical innovations integrate with the practice of CBT.

Though acceptance and mindfulness interventions have proven enormously effective for adults with stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, they have not been fully documented for use with children and adolescents. And yet they are a natural fit for children's therapy-the focus on acceptance and mindfulness builds children's psychological flexibility, and the values component of these methods helps young people learn to set goals and take action to achieve them. The chapters in Acceptance and Mindfulness Treatments for Children and Adolescents show how to modify third-wave behavioral and cognitive therapy methods for the treatment of children and adolescents. This book also considers the early evidence for the adaptability and effectiveness of these methods. Edited by two luminaries in the field of third-wave behavior therapy, these essays will be invaluable in helping young patients reap the benefits of acceptance and mindfulness approaches such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). •Learn how ACT, DBT, MBCT, and MBSR can be used with young people and their families •Discover recent third-wave behavior therapy research •Explore the practice issues that arise when acceptance and mindfulness techniques are used with children and adolescents •Find out how to put these techniques to work in your own practice

Praise for Acceptance and Mindfulness in Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Understanding and Applying the New Therapies "One of the most fruitful aspects of the encounter between classical Buddhist knowledge and modern science has been the emergence of new therapeutic and educational approaches that integrate contemplative practice, such as mindfulness, and contemporary psychology methods, such as those of cognitive therapy. The systematic approach of this book, wherein the insights of both classical Buddhist and contemporary psychology are integrated, represents a most beneficial and powerful method of ensuring a healthy mind and heart." —His Holiness the Dalai Lama "What has been missing in the midst of partisan battles between orthodox CBT therapists and enthusiastic proponents of newer acceptance/mindfulness approaches is a reasoned, scientifically grounded discourse that would help researchers and clinicians alike sort through the various claims and counterclaims. This book, skillfully conceived and edited by James Herbert and Evan Forman, provides just such a sober and open-minded appraisal of a trend that has sometimes suffered both from too much hype from one side and too sweeping a rejection by the other. This volume encourages careful consideration of both positions and can advance evidence-based psychosocial therapy both conceptually and procedurally to the benefit of all." —From the Foreword by Gerald C. Davison, PhD, University of Southern California Acceptance and Mindfulness in Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Understanding and Applying the New Therapies brings together a renowned group of leading figures in CBT who address key issues and topics, including: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy Metacognitive therapy Mindfulness-based stress reduction Dialectical behavior therapy Understanding acceptance and commitment therapy in context
