"Every day after that, Danny does something to frighten Craig....Craig is smaller and far too scared to tell even his parents, let alone his teachers. He is miserable. And every day, Danny tries harder to make it worse." On the internet, on playgrounds, and in schools across the country, thousands of elementary and middle school kids are picked on, teased, and harassed by bullies. It's something that can jeopardize a child's development -- unless they have the tools to help stop bullying in its tracks. In Jay McGraw's Life Strategies for Dealing with Bullies, McGraw helps kids identify potentially harmful situations and deal with bullies through tips, techniques, and examples that apply to real-life situations. Jay doesn't just speak about the bullies -- he also speaks to the bullies themselves to help them change their ways. Jay takes a no-nonsense approach to bullying and the ways readers can handle it. This timely and much-needed book will be the tool kids across the country can use to stop being victims -- and take back the power in their lives.

Bullying has long been tolerated as a rite of passage among children and adolescents. There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Additionally, the book arms parents with workable suggestions they can offer their children for dealing with different types of bullies, such as teasers, excluders, intimidators, and cyber bullies. The most important feature of Who Says Bullies Rule?, and what sets it apart from other books, is that it underscores the importance of having children use their common sense to anticipate and deal with bullies' actions. No child should ever have to tolerate physical or mental abuse at the hands of a bully. Parents are the first line of defense against bullying. Using a conversational tone with myriad examples, Who Says Bullies Rule? shows parents what they need to do to help keep their children safe.

Are you dealing with someone who makes you miserable? Does she cut people down or say something mean and then claim, "Just kidding?" Do you talk on eggshells because you never know what might set him off? Do you work with, for, or around someone who loves to stir up drama? Do you wish this person would just leave you alone? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you're in the right place. This "tell-it-the-way-it-is" book teaches you exactly what to say and do when someone is mistreating you - at work, at home, online, at school or next door. It also shows why the well-intended "Be the change you wish to see" approach backfires with bullies. Why? Bullies don't care what's fair. They don't want to cooperate, they want to control. They don't want a win-win, they want to win. The nicer you are to them, the meaner they'll be to you. The good news is, you can learn how to stand up and speak up for yourself and others, instead of feeling defenseless and powerless. In this book, you will discover what to do when the 5%ers (bullies, haters, trolls and toxics): Throw a tantrum and cause a scene to get their way Never admit fault and blame everyone else for what goes wrong Lie, cheat, make things up, break promises, play martyr Insist on being in control and attack anyone who challenges them Treat others - customers, employees, students, family members - cruelly Seem to get pleasure out of causing other people pain Develop the courage, confidence and communication skills to hold bullies accountable so they no longer take advantage of your good nature, and no longer have the power to undermine the self-esteem, morale, performance, productivity and success of the people around them."

The Smart Classroom Management Way is a collection of the very best writing from ten years of Smart Classroom Management (SCM). It isn't, however, simply a random mix of popular articles. It's a comprehensive work that encompasses every principle, theme, and methodology of the SCM approach. The book is laid out across six major areas of classroom management and includes the most pressing issues, problems, and concerns shared by all teachers. The underlying SCM themes of accountability, maturity, independence, personal responsibility, and intrinsic motivation are all there and weave their way throughout the entirety of the book. Together, they form a simple, unique, and sometimes contrarian approach to classroom management that anyone can do. Whether you're an elementary, middle, or high school teacher, The Smart Classroom Management Way will give you the strategies, skills, and know-how to turn any group of students into the motivated, well-behaved class you love teaching.
