The Gang Life: Laugh Now, Cry Later examines the criminal gangster mindset and offers gang prevention strategies, using real-world examples to demonstrate a holistic approach toward combatting this surging societal problem. The text outlines the evolution of gang membership from a state of interest, to association, to hardcore "O.G." (Original Gangster) status, and explores the evolution of law enforcement’s multi-pronged approach to combating criminal street gang violence, from the catch-and-release mentality of the 1970s and 1980s to today’s collaboration with private organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs. In-depth profiles, case studies, and lengthy histories of gangs, gang members, and their transformations are provided to demonstrate the deleterious effect of gangs on society. Designed for criminal justice students and for practitioners in the field, this text offers readers a holistic approach toward gang prevention from three nationally awarded educators and gang investigators.

“One of the year’s most important books, a gripping meticulously reported account of the rise of one of the world’s most notorious street gangs.” —Mitch Weiss, Pulitzer Prize winner Winner of the Lukas Prize An NPR Best Book of the Year The MS-13 was born from war. In the 1980s, Alex and his brother fled El Salvador for the US and formed the Mara Salvatrucha Stoners. Initially bound by a love of heavy metal music, the group soon took on a harder edge, selling drugs, stealing cars and killing rivals. Gang members like Alex were incarcerated and deported. But in the prison system, the group only grew stronger. Today, MS-13 is one of the most infamous street gangs on earth—and also largely misunderstood. Longtime organized crime investigator Steven Dudley brings readers inside the nefarious group to tell a broader story of flawed US and Central American policies and the exploitative, unequal systems that shape them. “A remarkable feat of reporting; the ways in which the United States is complicit in the creation and preservation of MS-13 might well keep you awake deep into the night, as it did me.” —Rachel Louise Snyder, author of No Visible Bruises “By detailing the experiences of gang members and victims alike, he anatomizes the complex, fluid dynamics of this elusive transnational network. A startling book.” —Patrick Radden Keefe, New York Times–bestselling author of Rogues: True Stories of Grifters, Killers, Rebels and Crooks “The definitive account of MS-13 . . . An outstanding book for true crime readers.” —Library Journal (starred review)

New Investigative Book Exposes Former President's Foundation is at the Center of the Anti-Police Firestorm The wave of riots and anti-police actions that began in the Spring of 2020, and continue to this day, have been generally reported by the mainstream media as an entirely spontaneous grass roots response to the death in police custody of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The mainstream media got it wrong. National Police Association writer and retired Seattle police officer Steve Pomper's new book, The Obama Gang, provides for the first time an explanation that what happened was far from spontaneous. This investigation into what is really behind the new vilification of law enforcement exposes the groundwork for the anti-police firestorm was carefully created, organized and led by former president Barack Obama's Foundation, and executed by the Foundation's web of allies. The anti-police machine which has been constructed to operate across the country 24/7. The seemingly independent anti-police factions are in actuality part of a larger "family" or "gang" of wealthy and radical individuals and organizations. With former President Barack H. Obama's Foundation at the top, they operate similar to an organized crime family--on the periphery of civil society. From the bottom up, the organizational chart begins with the "soldiers" on the streets, who caused such visible destruction during 2020, and climbs the crowded pyramid to the top. This "family", or gang of individuals and organizations are now working together like never before to collapse policing in America as we know it--to collapse America as we know it.

This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. Between 1980 and the mid-1990s, the number of specialized gang units (SGU) in law enforcement agencies increased substantially. The rise in SGU coincided with the widespread adoption of community policing (CP). This report examined whether CP and SGU are complementary or conflicting approaches. The research approach consisted of field observation of gang personnel in two CP agencies with SGU: Indianapolis, IN, and San Diego, CA. This report describes the specific types of activities engaged in by SGU -- documenting the time expended by SGU personnel on each. The results suggest that SGU can have an important role in modern policing. There is little evidence that SGU conflict with CU in principle or practice.
