The publication "Fold, Unfold : Deployable Structures and Digital Fabrication" is the documentation of the workshop of the same name hosted at TU-Berlin from february till march 2017 in collaboration with ETSAE Cartagena. The main objective of this seminar was to design and build different prototypes of deployable structures that can colonize a space to be inhabited temporarily.

Deployable structures are mobile constructions with a great variety of spacial peculiarity, extent and layout. The documented workshop “Digital Fabrication & Deployable Structures” investigates in their history and tests how those flexible structures can be digitally fabricated and parametrically designed using lasercutting technology. The resulting prototypes were developed in a collaborative process and furthermore functionalized by the embedment into a narrative.

The limitation of available resources and the economic and climatic costs of energy inevitably lead to light constructions as a necessary means of curtailing consumption. The documented workshops “Flying Structures” and "Fold Fly Inflate" investigates and tests how those light structures can be digitally fabricated and parametrically designed using lasercutting and 3D printing technology. The resulting prototypes were developed in a collaborative process.

The first book on active matter, an emerging field focused on programming physical materials to assemble themselves, transform autonomously, and react to information. The past few decades brought a revolution in computer software and hardware; today we are on the cusp of a materials revolution. If yesterday we programmed computers and other machines, today we program matter itself. This has created new capabilities in design, computing, and fabrication, which allow us to program proteins and bacteria, to generate self-transforming wood products and architectural details, and to create clothing from “intelligent textiles” that grow themselves. This book offers essays and sample projects from the front lines of the emerging field of active matter. Active matter and programmable materials are at the intersection of science, art, design, and engineering, with applications in fields from biology and computer science to architecture and fashion. These essays contextualize current work and explore recent research. Sample projects, generously illustrated in color, show the range of possibilities envisioned by their makers. Contributors explore the design of active material at scales from nano to micro, kilo, and even planetary. They investigate processes of self-assembly at a microscopic level; test new materials that can sense and actuate themselves; and examine the potential of active matter in the built environment and in living and artificial systems. Active Matter is an essential guide to a field that could shape the future of design.

Origami structures have the ability to be easily fabricated from planar forms, enable the deployment of large structures from small volumes, and are potentially reconfigurable. These characteristics have led to an increased interest in theoretical and computational origami among engineers from across the world. In this book, the principles of origami, active materials, and solid mechanics are combined to present a full theory for origami structures. The focus is on origami structures morphed via active material actuation and formed from sheets of finite thickness. The detailed theoretical derivations and examples make this an ideal book for engineers and advanced students who aim to use origami principles to develop new applications in their field.

From an authoritative expert whose work on modern helicopter rotor blade analysis has spanned over three decades, comes the first consistent and rigorous presentation of beam theory. Beginning with an overview of the theory developed over the last 60 years, Dr. Hodges addresses the kinematics of beam deformation, provides a simple way to characterize strain in an initially curved and twisted beam, and offers cross-sectional analysis for beams with arbitrary cross sections and composed of arbitrary materials. He goes on to present a way to accurately recover all components of cross-sectional strain and stress before providing a natural one-dimensional (1-D) theory of beams. Sample results for both cross-sectional and 1-D analysis are presented as is a parallel treatment for thin-walled beams.

An examination of architecture related to the mathematical concept of folding and catastrophe theory. Articles by Peter Eisenman and John Rajchman provide an analysis of the theory, while projects by Eisenman, Bahram Shirdel and Frank Gehry, among others, are presented, all showing folding theory worked into architectural practice.
