A unique study of lectionaries and graphic design as a site of biblical reception How artists portrayed the Bible in large canvas paintings is frequently the subject of scholarly exploration, yet the presentation of biblical texts in contemporary graphic designs has been largely ignored. In this book Amanda Dillon engages multimodal analysis, a method of semiotic discourse, to explore how visual composition, texture, color, directionality, framing, angle, representations, and interactions produce potential meanings for biblical graphic designs. Dillon focuses on the artworks of two American graphic designers—the woodcuts designed by Meinrad Craighead for the Roman Catholic Sunday Missal and Nicholas Markell’s illustrations for the worship books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America—to present the merits of multimodal analysis for biblical reception history.

This single-volume work covers many traditions, customs, and activities Westerners may find unusual or shocking, covering everything from the Ashanti people's funeral celebrations to wife-carrying competitions in Finland. In Maharashtra, India, a tradition exists to throw newborn babies off the tops of buildings. At the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand, some people ritualistically pierce their cheeks and faces with swords and knives. How did these surprising customs come to be? From camel wrestling to cheese-rolling competitions to a tomato-throwing festival, this fascinating single-volume encyclopedia examines more than 100 customs, traditions, and rituals that may be considered strange and exotic to U.S. readers. This work provides high school and undergraduate students with a compelling and fascinating exploration of world customs and traditions. Comprising entries by anthropologists, religious leaders, scholars, dancers, musicians, historians, and artists from almost every continent in the world, this encyclopedia provides readers a truly global and multidisciplinary perspective. The entries explore the origins of the custom, explain how it was established as a tradition, and describe how and where it is practiced. A thematic guide enables readers to look up entries by the type of tradition or custom, such as birth, coming of age, courtship and wedding, funeral, daily customs, holidays, and festivals.

It needs immense focus and determination to write a memoir, not to mention the discipline and a routine. However, the most difficult part of writing a memoir is coming to terms with the self. And discovering the self is such a complex process. There are layers and layers of the self that have to be exposed and the end-product is the nakedness that is described in the form of words in this memoir. Sometimes, it is easy to peel off these layers of prejudices and memories, some biases and some emotions, but the final outcome is not something that is the gospel truth. It is so because there is nobody to question you on the sort of line of thinking and words that you choose to represent the body of a memoir, in the sense that everything preordained by the way one’s neural networks are wired. That’s why I titled this memoir as ‘reflections of the self’, as the true nature of the self cannot possibly be determined merely by words and just by living one life. It takes several iterations when one truly understands the real self and perhaps that is what liberation or Moksha is all about.
