Education is critical to the success of our children, and education is critical to the success of our future economy. And yet, as a Nation, we are struggling. Our skills as a Nation, as they relate to skills in other countries around the world, are slipping. And we are now ranked 14th out of 34 countries for reading skills, 17th for science, 25th for mathematics. We are becoming the first generation of adults whose children are getting less education than we got. We are becoming the first generation in which our children often do not get hands-on experience through shop classes, a generation in which many schools are losing their music classes, even gym classes, things that aren't connected directly to No Child Left Behind testing. We have testing that perhaps has some elements that are valuable but has a lot of shortcomings. That is not a path for either the success of our children in a knowledge-based economy or the success of our future economy.

Despite the best efforts of educators, our nation's schools are dangerously obsolete. Instead of teaching students to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers, we are asking them to memorize facts for multiple choice tests. This problem isn't limited to low-income school districts: even our top schools aren't teaching or testing the skills that matter most in the global knowledge economy. Our teens leave school equipped to work only in the kinds of jobs that are fast disappearing from the American economy. Meanwhile, young adults in India and China are competing with our students for the most sought-after careers around the world. Education expert Tony Wagner has conducted scores of interviews with business leaders and observed hundreds of classes in some of the nation's most highly regarded public schools. He discovered a profound disconnect between what potential employers are looking for in young people today (critical thinking skills, creativity, and effective communication) and what our schools are providing (passive learning environments and uninspired lesson plans that focus on test preparation and reward memorization). He explains how every American can work to overhaul our education system, and he shows us examples of dramatically different schools that teach all students new skills. In addition, through interviews with college graduates and people who work with them, Wagner discovers how teachers, parents, and employers can motivate the &"net"; generation to excellence. An education manifesto for the twenty-first century, The Global Achievement Gap is provocative and inspiring. It is essential reading for parents, educators, business leaders, policy-makers, and anyone interested in seeing our young people succeed as employees and citizens. Preparing students to participate fully in today's and tomorrow's world demands that we nurture their global competence, and this book shows teachers how to do just that. In a world rife with rapid change, environmental vulnerabilities, and racial inequities, this second edition of Educating for Global Competence poses an urgent question: What matters most for students to understand about our complex and interconnected world so they can participate fully in its future? Veronica Boix Mansilla and Anthony W. Jackson identify the key skills, values, and attitudes that K–12 students must cultivate to thrive in the 21st century. The book features a practical framework for global competence education. The framework's four dimensions focus on developing students’ capacity to * Examine local, global, and intercultural issues. * Understand and appreciate the perspectives and worldviews of others. * Engage in open, appropriate, and effective interactions across cultures. * Take action toward collective well-being and sustainable development. This edition includes many new authentic examples of integrating global competence into curriculum, instruction, and assessment across subject areas. Through these examples, we see the practical ways educators can prepare young people to see the complexities of the world and to develop the skills needed to explore and solve problems on a global scale. Educating for Global Competence shows teachers, administrators, and policymakers how they can leverage their influence to make teaching for global competence a compelling endeavor that yields world-changing results.

In Mobilizing the Community to Help Students Succeed, Hugh B. Price shares the lessons learned while helping to do just that during his tenure as president of the National Urban League. Here, find out how educators can apply some of the same tactics to inspire and award academic achievement in even the most challenged school districts. Using real-life examples and shared wisdom from successful educators and community organizers coast to coast, Price describes ways to * Create initiatives such as community-based honor societies, parades, and rallies to motivate students and reward achievement; * Include parents in motivational efforts to rekindle students' natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning; * Enlist the support of businesses and other community partners for both financial support and volunteer help; * Maximize use of the media to publicize student accomplishments; and * Set up programs that honor student achievement year-round. According to Price, a highly informed and engaged community is essential to closing the achievement gap. This book underscores that community-based efforts to motivate student success can be effective because they have been effective. The message for educators, parents, business and civic leaders, and members of the general public is that their consistent and creative involvement will result in invigorated youngsters, inspired to achieve in school and in life.
