Weather forecasting is the most visible branch of meteorology and has its modern roots in the nineteenth century when scientists redefined meteorology in the way weather forecasts were made, developing maps of isobars, or lines of equal atmospheric pressure, as the main forecasting tool. This book is the history of how weather forecasting was moulded and modelled by the processes of nation-state building and statistics in the Western world.
This book has as main aim to be an introductory textbook of applied knowledge in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), which is a method of weather forecasting that employs: A set of equations that describe the flow of fluids translated into computer code, combined with parameterizations of other processes, applied on a specific domain and integrated in the basis of initial and domain boundary conditions. Current weather observations serve as input to the numerical computer models through a process called data assimilation to produce atmospheric properties in the future (e.g. temperature, precipitation, and a lot of other meteorological parameters). Various case studies will be also presented and analyzed through this book.
This report describes the development of an early prototype expert system for the classical single-station weather forecasting problem. The skills required to maximize forecast quality based on such limited data are being lost though they continue to have application to certain military scenarios which include communications interruptions. Knowledge for the expert system was obtained from a meteorologist experienced in single-station weather forecasting by working through case study data. The prototype was developed on a microcomputer and uses forward and backward chaining rules, frames, and other functions and procedures written in LISP. The expert, system is able to emulate the expert for a several day case study used in the development, although much more work must be done to make the system useful for the general meteorological situation.
