'Orpheus, the pagan saint of poets, went through hell and came back singing. In twentieth-century mythology, the singer wears a steel helmet and makes his descent "down some profound dull tunnel" in the stinking mud of the Western Front. For most readers of English poetry, the face under that helmet is that of Wilfred Owen.' Professor Jon Stallworthy, from his Introduction. When Wilfred Owen was killed in the days before the Armistice in 1918, he left behind a shattering, truthful and indelible record of a soldier's experience of the First World War. His greatest war poetry has been collected, edited and introduced here by Professor Jon Stallworthy. This special edition is published to commemorate the end of the hellish war that Owen, though the hard-won truth and terrible beauty of his poetry, has taught us never to forget.

From the worst horrors of modern trench warfare a small handful of soldiers and nurses created a body of poetry that is so vivid and intense that one hundred years later it has engraved itself on our national consciousness. This anthology focuses on those poets who were on the front line, from the famous Sassoon, Owens and Graves, to nurses like Vera Brittain. The poems are accompanied by a brief and accessible introduction, which sets the context for a reader new to the poems, as well as short biographical profiles of the poets.

"The present Anthology contains a number of representative poems produced by English-speaking men and women. The editorial policy has been humanly hospitable, rather than academically critical, especially in the case of some of the verses written by soldiers at the Front, which, however slight in certain instances their technical merit may be, are yet psychologically interesting as sincere transcripts of personal experience, and will, it is thought, for that very reason, peculiarly attract and interest the reader. It goes without saying that there are several poems in this group which conspicuously succeed also as works of art. For the rest, the attempt has been made, within such limitations as have been experienced, to present pretty freely the best of what has been found available in contemporary British and American war verse." This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

This collection of 17 Poems from the Great War represented the free offering of English poets to the cause of National Relief during WWI. Most of these poems appeared in the Press at the outbreak of WWI. Mr. Robert Bridges' (Poet Laureate 1913 – 1930) opening contribution, Mr. Henry Newbolt's, Mr. Maurice Hewlett's, Mr. R. E. Vernède's, Mr. Binyon's, were all printed in the Times during the few days immediately following the declaration of war, as also was the sonnet by Mr. William Watson. Sir Owen Seaman's poem came out originally in Punch, "The Hour" in the Daily Telegraph, "The United Front" in the Daily Mail. "We Willed it Not" is reprinted from the Sphere, "Duty" and "Commandeered" from the Westminster Gazette, and the poems by Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Cecil Chesterton from the New Witness. The New Weekly published the verses by Mr. John Freeman, and the Daily Chronicle those by Mr. Harold Begbie. The two hymns which close the collection are reprinted, by special permission of their authors, from volumes previously published. The original cover design, from which the current was developed, was contributed by Mr. William Nicholson (1872 – 1949). As the National Relief program was wound up in about 1923, the 10% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the Royal British Legion for their continued work with Returned Servicemen.

Written with language that works in harmony with the rhythm of the poems, seasoned poet David J. Murray offers his third collection of work in War-Wise and Other Poems. Presented in two parts, the first set, War-Wise, contains thirty-five poems reflecting Murrays memories of life in Manchester, England, during World War IIa war that began when he was two years old. Emitting clear and powerful imagery, some of the titles are straightforward narrative. Others are more reflective and address the effect the Holocaust had on his eight-year-old mind. In Ghosts, Murray combines the innocence of childhood with the violence of war. In Sunday School, we sometimes drew Pictures whose innocence shone through The spattered lines of gunshot fire That dotted and dashed each page entire Until, on the page, a Messerschmidt Was finally and firmly hit And fell in flames into the blue Of our crayond sea; we drew no crew. The second collection, One Hundred Mood Studies, contains a set of short, stand-alone, rhymed sonnets, each expressing a modern-day emotional conflict. Exercises in the craft of formal writing, these poems provide an outlet for everyday shifts in emotions.
