With nearly three thousand new entries, the revised edition of Operas in German: A Dictionary is the most current encyclopedic treatment of operas written specifically to a German text from the seventeenth century through 2016. Musicologist Margaret Ross Griffel details the operas’ composers, scores, librettos, first performances, and bibliographic sources. Four appendixes then list composers, librettists, authors whose works inspired or were adapted for the opera librettos, and a chronological listing of the entries in the A–Z section. The bibliography details other dictionaries and encyclopedias, performance studies, collections of plot summaries, general studies on operas, sources on locales where opera premieres took place, works on the history of operas in German, and selective volumes on individual opera composers, librettists, producers, directors, and designers. Finally, two indexes list the main characters in each opera and the names of singers, conductors, producers, composers, directors, choreographers, and arrangers. The revised edition of Operas in German provides opera historians, musicologists, performers, and opera lovers with an invaluable resource for continued study and enjoyment. As the most current encyclopedic collection of German opera from the seventeenth century through the twenty-first, Operas in German is an invaluable resource for opera historians, musicologists, performers, and opera lovers.

The essays contained in this volume were originally delivered as papers to a conference on the German-language broadcasting of the BBC, held in London in 2002. For over sixty years, the BBC German Service was Britain's most authoritative voice to the German-speaking world, representing a virtual paradigm of British cultural and political attitudes towards Germany and Austria - and helping to define their perceptions of Britain and the British. Despite the BBC's enormous cultural standing and influence, however, this volume is the first to evaluate the Corporation's German-language broadcasting since the BBC German Service was closed down in 1999. The essays fall into three broad categories: German-language broadcasting during the Second World War, broadcasting to Germany and Austria during the Cold War, and finally a series of personal accounts from former employees of the Service. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of broadcasting (including media studies) as well as those involved in German Studies and in German and Austrian Exile Studies.

This work traces the development of Austrian-born poet Erich Fried (1921-1988) from his childhood, when he was forced to flee from his native country after the annexation of Austria in 1938, to his status as one of the most productive modern German poets. Particular attention is paid to Fried's early years in London during the war, his relationship with the political exile organizations in London, and his literary development from 1938-1945. "Following the German annexation of Austria in 1938 and the intensified persecution of the Jews, the British and American governments relaxed their restrictions on immigration and issued entry visas to tens of thousands of German-speaking refugees. The resulting exodus can be seen as the most significant cultural migration of modern times. For the majority of the refugees from National Socialism came from educated backgrounds, and they included some of the most gifted members of the cultural elite." "The remarkable contributions made by refugees from Austria to the cultural life of the English-speaking world form the subject of this book, which reviews the achievements both of refugee organisations and of outstanding individual authors, including Stefan Zweig, Erich Fried, Hilde Spiel, Josef Fraenkel, Felix Pollak and Elias Canetti. Their commitment to the struggle against fascism, exemplified by the political cartoons of Joseph Otto Flatter, also provided an inspiration for the restoration of Austrian independence after the defeat of Nazi Germany." --Book Jacket.

'It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black...' Under Milk Wood tells the story of a Welsh village during one spring day. It is populated by some of the best-loved characters in British literature. Lyrical, funny, moving, it is rooted in place but with a universality that has spoken to generations of readers. A Welsh epic, a work of poetic genius, a modern classic. 'A tour de force of oral poetry which oozes word pictures and onomatopoeic musicality' Guardian

Commissioned by the BBC, and described by Dylan Thomas as 'a play for voices', UNDER MILK WOOD takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has 'fallen head over bells in love'. The First Voice narration reveals the ordinary world of daily happenings and events, while the Second Voice conveys the intimate, innermost thoughts of the fascinating folk of Llareggub. There have been myriad productions of UNDER MILK WOOD over the years and Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Elizabeth Taylor, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Jones have all starred in radio, stage or film adaptations. Dylan Thomas's classic radio play reprinted to celebrate the centenary of his birth. A true masterpiece that has never been out of print.
