The four members of Florida-based metal phenomenon Trivium have shaken the world of heavy metal since their inception in 2000 - yet this group of regular kids from Orlando had to work harder than most to achieve recognition. The group formed at a high school talent contest and, after performing a number of low-key gigs at parties and small venues over two years, the quartet honed their metallic skills, playing thrash metal classics in rehearsal while gradually developing their own sound on the road. The hard hours in dank basements paid off when Heafy was awarded 'Best Metal Guitarist Award' at the Orlando Metal Awards. Soon, Trivium recorded their first demo which in turn saw their wares seized upon by the German hardcore/metalcore label Lifeforce. The four-piece dispatched their songs with such mature craft and flashy interplay that there was no chance they would remain on an independent label for long. Roadrunner records were the lucky company to receive a signed contract and they helped push Trivium beyond underground status, making their second album Ascendancy a worldwide bestseller.

Artists, film-makers, musicians, lonely kids looking for love ... all twists on life can be found on the new breed of social networking sites. These sites - such as Bebo, Faceparty, Facebook and Myspace - are the most powerful social force since the formation of the internet itself, revolutionising not only the internet, but an entire generation's social lives. Bloggers have found love, unwise liaisons have been discovered and careers have been launched. In June 2006, Playboy magazine launched a special edition focusing on 'girls of Myspace'; within the UK music industry, My Chemical Romance, Lily Allen and Arctic Monkeys have all enjoyed huge success on the back of publicising their music on such websites... the impact and repercussions are infinite. Through interviews with bands, music industry professionals, and a host of weird and wonderful characters, the history and impact of these unique websites - and their social impact - is told for the first time in a suitably irreverent style. This is not a book for computer geeks or tech-heads, but an immensely readable and entertaining insight into the real people and bewildering stories caught up in this most modern of digital communications.

Five hundred years before “Jabberwocky” and Tender Buttons, writers were already preoccupied with the question of nonsense. But even as the prevalence in medieval texts of gibberish, babble, birdsong, and allusions to bare voice has come into view in recent years, an impression persists that these phenomena are exceptions that prove the rule of the period’s theologically motivated commitment to the kernel of meaning over and against the shell of the mere letter. This book shows that, to the contrary, the foundational object of study of medieval linguistic thought was vox non-significativa, the utterance insofar as it means nothing whatsoever, and that this fact was not lost on medieval writers of various kinds. In a series of close and unorthodox readings of works by Priscian, Boethius, Augustine, Walter Burley, Geoffrey Chaucer, and the anonymous authors of the Cloud of Unknowing and St. Erkenwald, it inquires into the way that a number of fourteenth-century writers recognized possibilities inherent in the accounts of language transmitted to them from antiquity and transformed those accounts into new ideas, forms, and practices of non-signification. Retrieving a premodern hermeneutics of obscurity in order to provide materials for an archeology of the category of the literary, Medieval Nonsense shows how these medieval linguistic textbooks, mystical treatises, and poems were engineered in such a way as to arrest the faculty of interpretation and force it to focus on the extinguishing of sense that occurs in the encounter with language itself.
