Famous Trees of Texas was first published in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service (now Texas A&M Forest Service), an organization created in 1915 and charged with protecting and sustaining the forests, trees, and other related natural resources of Texas. For the 100-year anniversary of TFS, the agency presents a new edition of this classic book, telling the stories of 101 trees throughout the state. Some are old friends, featured in the first edition and still alive (27 of the original 81 trees described in the first edition have died); some are newly designated, discovered as people began to recognize their age and value. All of them remain “living links” to the state’s storied past.
This book explores fundamental aspects of geometric network optimisation with applications to a variety of real world problems. It presents, for the first time in the literature, a cohesive mathematical framework within which the properties of such optimal interconnection networks can be understood across a wide range of metrics and cost functions. The book makes use of this mathematical theory to develop efficient algorithms for constructing such networks, with an emphasis on exact solutions. Marcus Brazil and Martin Zachariasen focus principally on the geometric structure of optimal interconnection networks, also known as Steiner trees, in the plane. They show readers how an understanding of this structure can lead to practical exact algorithms for constructing such trees. The book also details numerous breakthroughs in this area over the past 20 years, features clearly written proofs, and is supported by 135 colour and 15 black and white figures. It will help graduate students, working mathematicians, engineers and computer scientists to understand the principles required for designing interconnection networks in the plane that are as cost efficient as possible.
Most published books on agroforestry have focused on biophysical aspects. There has been a lack of scientifically rigorous information about the socioeconomic features of agroforestry, and the adoption of agroforestry practices by farmers.This book fills that gap by assessing the adoption of selected agroforestry practices developed with African farmers, describing methods, and drawing out the implications for research, development, and policy. The volume includes five case studies of research conducted in Kenya and Zambia to evaluate the adoption potential of agroforestry. The cases illustrate methods of farm and village technology design, testing, and analysis that are applicable to a wide range of natural resource management practices.Along with the case studies, the contents also include chapters on: methods for assessing agroforestry adoption potential, promoting new agroforestry technologies: policy lessons from on-farm research, and assessing adoption potential: lessons learned and future directions.
Abstract: Total weights and volumes, above stump, were determined for 71 northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) trees 6 to 24 inches d.b.h. growing in fully stocked oak-hickory stands in western North Carolina. Equations are presented for predicting green and dry weights and green volume of the total tree, above stump, and its components using d.b.h. and total height, d.b.h. and height to a 4-inch top, d.b.h. and saw-log merchantable height, and d.b.h. along. Tablesdeveloped from equations show weight and volume of the total tree and it components by d.b.h. and total height classes. Seventy-five percent of total-tree weight was in stem to a 4-inch top and 25 percent in crown. The average tree had 85 percent of its green weight in wood and 15 percent in bark. Total-tree wood had an average specific gravity of 0.581, and average moisture content of 80 percent, and an average green weight per cubic foot of 65 pounds. The average weightof wood and bark per cubic foot of wood for the total tree was 77 pounds.
