Excerpt from The Yorkshire Coast: And the Cleveland Hills and Dales The purpose of this book needs to be briefly described. It is descriptive of the Yorkshire coast, and of the north-eastern hills of that great and historic county, and a chief object has been to give to localities which are attractive enough in themselves the added interest of the history and the legendary lore that properly belongs to them. The perusal of this book will, indeed, show that almost very village breathes of history, and that there is a host of notable events whereof the Yorkshire coast and its neighbourhood hold record. Most Yorkshiremen know this very well, and they may be glad to possess a book that will remind them of the interest of localities; but those who each year resort in great numbers for health and enjoyment to the watering-places of the coast from every part of the kingdom miss, as it seems to the author - saving a few of them - some of the pleasure their wanderings should bring them. There was, indeed, an initial difficulty in the writing of this book. Where should a limit be fixed for the district to be treated? North Yorkshire boasts some of the most stunning countryside and amazing seaside anywhere in England, and its history is equally dramatic. Whitby Museum holds evidence of the great sea creatures that formerly populated this region millions of years ago. The soft shale rocks reveal and release fossils of remarkable sealife from small ammonites to giant plesiosaurs. This is truly the 'Dinosaur Coast'. From the southern areas around Filey to the far north of our story at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, each area has its own tales to tell. Within these pages, we take a journey in words and full-colour pictures along Yorkshire's Dinosaur Coast. Discover the twentieth-century seaside resorts of Filey and Scarborough and the secret cliffs of Robin Hood's Bay. Visit the home of Dracula, the fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick Bay, and stand on the pier at Saltburn to watch the great ships that still service the area's industry. Wildlife, history, heritage and landscape combine to make the northern coastline of Yorkshire a fascinating place to visit. This is Yorkshire at its best.

The beautiful county of Yorkshire is the largest in Britain, and yet still possesses a strong and cohesive regional identity. Built on centuries of shared tradition, a characteristic body of folklore has thrived and endured well into the present day. Folklore of Yorkshire chronicles such beliefs throughout the whole county, identifying distinctive common themes, placing them in their historical context and considering their social and psychological function. You'll discover Yorkshire's holy wells and buried treasure, its boggarts, Black Dogs and fairies, and the legends behind the county's stunning landscape. This fully illustrated book shows how the customs of the past have influenced the ways of today, whilst also revealing something about the nature of folklore itself, both for the tradition-bearers and those who collect it.
