Imagine a large, battered old leather folder stuffed full of sheets of paper of various sizes and thicknesses - on the front, "Stories of the Witches of Old Allbyon" in curly letters, underneath there is a face. The hair and beard are made of leaves. Leaves are growing out of its mouth, and nostrils. Inside the folder, the stories - some written in round loopy handwriting on thick paper with wobbly edges. Some had been typed on a mechanical typewriter. Others were printouts from dot matrix printers, and some from more recent computer printers. All these stories were read to me when I was young. I didn't know it then, but the roots of everything that happened to us are in these stories, as the events in "The Last Wizard", grew out of what happened in "The Last Witch" - Maybe all stories begin in other stories. Who I am - who we are - I will leave for now. For now, we start with some of the tales of Old Allbyon.

Founded in 1971 by Elizabeth Pepper, the long-time art director of Gourmet magazine, The Witches’ Almanac is a witty, literate, and sophisticated publication that appeals to general readers as well as hard-core Wiccans and magicians. On one level, it is a pop reference that will fascinate anyone interested in folklore, mythology, and culture, but on another, it is the most sophisticated and wide-ranging annual guide available today for occultists and mysticism enthusiasts. Modeled after the Old Farmers’ Almanac, it includes information related to the annual moon calendar (weather forecasts and horoscopes), as well as legends, rituals, herbal secrets, mystic incantations, interviews, and many a curious tale of good and evil. Although it is an annual publication, only about 15 percent of the content is specific to the date range of each issue. The theme of Issue 38 (Spring 2019 to Spring 2020) is Animals: Friends and Familiars. Also included are the following articles: “Beer and Witches,” “Gargoyles,” “Horseshoes,” “Transgender in the Craft,” and “Coefficient of Weirdness, Part 3.” New authors include Sorita d’Este, Lon Milo DuQuette, David Rankine, and Mat Auryn.

James Hogg wrote some of his best stories in The Shepherd's Calendar, in which he defines the content and the manners of the traditional storytelling of Ettrick Forest, the mountainous region in Scotland where he grew up. They reveal Hogg's experiences as a young shepherd as it draws a picture of the pleasures and the dangers of the lives in Scottish Highlands. Some of these stories deal with the supernatural and explore psychological depths with a noteworthy intensity and insight. Large parts of these tales are written in a Scots dialect from the region of Ettrick Forest. The Shepherd's Calendar: Rob Dodds Mr Adamson of Laverhope The Prodigal Son The School of Misfortune George Dobson's Expedition to Hell The Souters of Selkirk The Laird of Cassway Tibby Hyslop's Dream Mary Burnet The Brownie of the Black Haggs The Laird of Wineholm Window Wat's Courtship A Strange Secret The Marvellous Doctor The Witches of Traquair Sheep Prayers Odd Characters Nancy Chisholm Snow-Storms The Shepherd's Dog The Expedition to Hell The Mysterious Bride The Wool-Gatherer The Hunt of Eildon James Hogg (1770-1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farmhand, and was largely self-educated through reading. He was a friend of many of the great writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott, of whom he later wrote an unauthorized biography.

An Exploration of the Magic Rites and Practices of Traditional Witchcraft, both Past and Present, Nice and Naughty. The truth is, Magic is the stuff of Witchcraft; the very life-blood that gives vibrancy in all its other aspects. We are all born with a capacity for practicing Magic, yet it is a topic that strikes fear into many for what it might actually do to them. Magic has a bad reputation, notwithstanding that it guided our ancient ancestors to initially develop the survival skills and techniques that have ultimately led to our modern-day world of science and technology. Magic means pushing the boundaries of what might just be possible. It implies change and therefore unsanctioned Magic has always been seen as a threat to the status quo. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating discipline; exploring, developing, and expanding one’s own mental powers. It entails a quest. From the Magic of Love and Sex to Witcherie with a Purpose demands skill, determination, and ability. From Astral Projection to Psychic Protection; from Magical Healing to communicating with spiritual entities from the Astral; the practice of Traditional Witchcraft demands a knowledge of Apies Magic, both the Nice and the Naughty; but best not the practice of its really naughty aspects. A Witches’ Canon, Part 1, provides a fact-based referenced guide for those wishing to further explore the Religion and Celebratory Rituals of Traditional Wicca. A Witches’ Canon, Part 2, has been written to provide a practical, referenced guide to the social aspects of Traditional Wicca; of Coven Organization, Initiations, Rites, and Rituals. A Witches’ Canon, Part 3, is a fact-based referenced guide to the practice of Magical Witchcraft, both nice and naughty. But then, if it isn’t fun, then it ain’t worth doing.
