From the very beginnings of sound recording, engineers have strived to reproduce the original sound as purely as possible and overcome the noise that technology leaves in recordings. However, this desire denies the fact that technologically mediated sound is always shaped and filtered by themany channels it travels through as it is recorded and reproduced. The noise that each medium inscribes on recorded sound is not just inescapable - it is fundamental to the sonic contours that characterize recorded music. But how exactly do media technologies shape sound and music? And how have theychanged what we listen for in music over time?In The Logic of Filtering, author Melle Jan Kromhout develops an extensive media archaeological analysis of the 'noise of sound media' that covers all the disturbances, distortions, and interferences that media add to the sounds they reproduce. Combining theoretical, historical, and technicalperspectives on sound media, Kromhout sketches a broad history of the problem of noise in sound recording as he traces the ideal of sonic purity back to nineteenth-century acoustics, examines analog and digital technologies, and analyzes the relationship between noise and temporality. In thoroughlyrevising our understanding of how sound media impact the sonorous qualities of music, this book offers a fresh perspective on the interactions between music, media, and listeners.

'The Logic of Filtering' offers a media archaeological perspective on sound and music that develops a new analysis of the noise that technologies add to recorded sound. It shows that this noise is not a disturbance but a central characteristic of recorded music that shapes how listeners relate to it.

The subject of Time has a wide intellectual appeal across different dis ciplines. This has shown in the variety of reactions received from readers of the first edition of the present Book. Many have reacted to issues raised in its philosophical discussions, while some have even solved a number of the open technical questions raised in the logical elaboration of the latter. These results will be recorded below, at a more convenient place. In the seven years after the first publication, there have been some noticeable newer developments in the logical study of Time and temporal expressions. As far as Temporal Logic proper is concerned, it seems fair to say that these amount to an increase in coverage and sophistication, rather than further break-through innovation. In fact, perhaps the most significant sources of new activity have been the applied areas of Linguistics and Computer Science (including Artificial Intelligence), where many intriguing new ideas have appeared presenting further challenges to temporal logic. Now, since this Book has a rather tight composition, it would have been difficult to interpolate this new material without endangering intelligibility.

At the beginning of the new millennium, fuzzy logic opens a new challenging perspective in information processing. This perspective emerges out of the ideas of the founder of fuzzy logic - Lotfi Zadeh, to develop 'soft' tools for direct computing with human perceptions. The enigmatic nature of human perceptions manifests in their unique capacity to generalize, extract patterns and capture both the essence and the integrity of the events and phenomena in human life. This capacity goes together with an intrinsic imprecision of the perception-based information. According to Zadeh, it is because of the imprecision of the human imprecision that they do not lend themselves to meaning representation through the use of precise methods based on predicate logic. This is the principal reason why existing scientific theories do not have the capability to operate on perception-based information. We are at the eve of the emergence of a theory with such a capability. Its applicative effectiveness has been already demonstrated through the industrial implementation of the soft computing - a powerful intelligent technology centred in fuzzy logic. At the focus of the papers included in this book is the knowledge and experience of the researchers in relation both to the engineering applications of soft computing and to its social and philosophical implications at the dawn of the third millennium. The papers clearly demonstrate that Fuzzy Logic revolutionizes general approaches for solving applied problems and reveals deep connections between them and their solutions.

This volume represents the state of the art for much current research in many-valued logics. Primary researchers in the field are among the authors. Major methodological issues of many-valued logics are treated, as well as applications of many-valued logics to reasoning with fuzzy information. Areas covered include: Algebras of multiple valued logics and their applications, proof theory and automated deduction in multiple valued logics, fuzzy logics and their applications, and multiple valued logics for control theory and rational belief.

Not only conventional computer architectures, such as the von-Neumann architecture with its inevitable von-Neumann bottleneck, but likewise the emerging field of edge computing require to substantially decrease the spatial separation of logic and memory units to overcome power and latency shortages. The integration of logic operations into memory units (Logic-in-Memory), as well as memory elements into logic circuits (Nonvolatile Logic), promises to fulfill this request by combining high-speed with low-power operation. Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) based on hafnium oxide prove to be auspicious candidates for the memory elements in applications of that kind, as those nonvolatile memory elements are CMOS-compatible and likewise scalable. This work presents implementations that merge logic and memory by exploiting the natural capability of the FeFET to combine logic functionality (transistor) and memory ability (nonvolatility).

Learn how Roslyn's new code generation capability will let you write software that is more concise, runs faster, and is easier to maintain. You will learn from real-world business applications to create better software by letting the computer write its own code based on your business logic already defined in lookup tables. Code Generation with Rosyln is the first book to cover this new capability. You will learn how these techniques can be used to simplify systems integration so that if one system already defines business logic through lookup tables, you can integrate a new system and share business logic by allowing the new system to write its own business logic based on already existing table-based business logic. One of the many benefits you will discover is that Roslyn uses an innovative approach to compiler design, opening up the inner workings of the compiler process. You will learn how to see the syntax tree that Roslyn is building as it compiles your code. Additionally, you will learn to feed it your own syntax tree that you create on the fly. What You'll Learn Structure logic to be stored in database design Build complex conditional logic based on lookup data in the database Compile code that you generate programmatically Discover generated code and run it dynamically to implement new business logic Debug problems in generated code Deploy and access generated code Who This Book Is For Back end developers in very dynamic fast-paced business environments. Developers focused on integrating different systems across an enterprise should also find this information useful.
