Private schools have frequently provided innovative, experimental, and creative programunavailable to students in the public system. The most successful have survived and expanded by offering an educational experience widely perceived to be not just as good as that available in the public system, but better. In Canada, private schools are enjoying an unprecedented popularity and while most are day-only, over sixty sustain boarding programs, as do two off-shore Canadian schools. The Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools presents information on the educational environment of each province, then offers comparative information on each boarding school. The information on each school includes: basic data, location, history, philosophy, the campus, boarding facilities, health and safety, administration and faculty, student body and student conduct, academic calendar and program, information technology, student activities and student conduct, admission and costs. The Handbook also supplies several appendices outlining important programs often available through boarding schools, such as Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate. For parents in Canada and abroad about to commit substantial sums to their children’s education, the Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools is an essential tool to help them make the right decision. It is also an indispensable resource for supporters of the public system looking for ideas that have worked elsewhere.

International Education and the Chinese Learner is one of the first full-length studies in the relatively new field of transnational pedagogy to explore the role of the Chinese learner in international schools and universities across the globe. It describes the unprecedented growth of international schools and university exchange programs during the past decade together with the way in which Chinese learners at all levels have taken advantage of these opportunities and have been scrutinized in the process. The results of this internationalization have in some cases solidified stereotypes about Chinese learners and in other instances have helped to overcome those prejudices. Teachers within the international schools comment about the challenges of integrating students from different ethnic and national backgrounds in their schools and about the rewards of developing intercultural programs that will give the students the most substantial, diverse, and ethical education and encourage cross-cultural understanding, build academic skills, and develop character. University teachers ù both Chinese and Western ù describe the opportunities and challenges for cross-cultural teaching and learning within the classrooms of their own countries and in global classrooms where local and international teachers together advance new perspectives based on team teaching, interdisciplinarity, and intercultural enquiry. Teachers within international schools and university and school teachers who teach exchange students and other international students will find the understanding, experiences, and practical advice to be of help in their own teaching, but those within international business communities may well find the research helpful in understanding their own intercultural environments. Janette Ryan is a lecturer in education at Monash University. She specializes in cross-cultural teaching and teaching for international students. She is a Mandarin Chinese speaker and works with a network of schools and universities across China on curriculum reform and professional learning communities. Gordon Slethaug is a visiting professor in English studies and communications at the University of Southern Denmark and has previously been professor of English at the University of Waterloo, Canada and director of American Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He has recently been visiting Lingnan professor at the University of Hong Kong and Sun Yat-sen University in China and senior Fulbright professor at the University of Southern Denmark.

The Oxford Handbook of Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of research on the mental health of sexual minorities-defined as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or same-gender attracted; as well as the mental health of gender minorities-defined as individuals who do not fully identify with their sex assigned at birth, including people who are transgender or gender non-binary. The twenty-first century has seen encouraging improvements in sampling, methods, and funding opportunities for research with sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations; nevertheless, a key purpose of this Handbook is to identify lingering gaps in research in order to motivate future scientists to expand knowledge about SGM mental health. The volume begins with a historical overview, followed by sections on mental health categories/diagnoses (such as anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, and suicide) and specific sexual and gender minority populations (including examinations of diverse ethnicities and orientations/identities). The handbook concludes with chapters on stigma, the role of resilience, and future directions for research with SGM groups. The volume is aimed at researchers conducting studies on the mental health of SGM populations, clinicians and researchers interested in psychiatric disorders that affect SGM populations, clinicians using evidence-based practice in the treatment of SGM patients/clients, students in mental health programs (clinical psychology, psychiatry, clinical social work, and psychiatric nursing), and policy makers.
