A startling look at revolutionary rhetoric and its effects Now known to the Chinese as the "ten years of chaos," the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–76) brought death to thousands of Chinese and persecution to millions. In Rhetoric of the Chinese Cultural Revolution Xing Lu identifies the rhetorical practices and persuasive effects of the polarizing political language and symbolic practices used by Communist Party leaders to legitimize their use of power and violence to dehumanize people identified as class enemies. Lu provides close readings of the movement's primary texts—political slogans, official propaganda, wall posters, and the lyrics of mass songs and model operas. She also scrutinizes such ritualistic practices as the loyalty dance, denunciation rallies, political study sessions, and criticism and self-criticism meetings. Lu enriches her rhetorical analyses of these texts with her own story and that of her family, as well as with interviews conducted in China and the United States with individuals who experienced the Cultural Revolution during their teenage years. In her new preface, Lu expresses deep concern about recent nationalism, xenophobia, divisiveness, and violence instigated by the rhetoric of hatred and fear in the United States and across the globe. She hopes that by illuminating the way language shapes perception, thought, and behavior, this book will serve as a reminder of past mistakes so that we may avoid repeating them in the future.

Acclaim national researcher Hu Angang presents Mao and the Cultural Revolution, an immensely rich account of the massive political event of 1966-1976 that brought seismic changes to the landscape of New China. A culmination of Mao Zedong's Political ambition, the Cultural Revolution restored his power and prestige as paramount leader, albeit at great costs to the economic and social development to the country. The impact of the movement -- more significantly, the politices that drove it -- deeply influences political philosophy in China today. Hu Angang's work provides a unique perspective and objective assessment of the progression of the Cultural Revolution, focusing on the intraparty politics, the Politburo's international outlook, and the political though the Chinese leadership that shaped this pivotal decade. Volume 3 analyzed the impact of the Cultural Revolution from both sociological and economic perspectives. Mao Zedong, being in his senior years, was gradually leaving the political stage. His decisions, however, catalyzed the power struggle between Jiang Qing and Deng Xiaoping, turning the situation into a white-hot ideological conflict. Hu not only provides a full picture of all of these conflicts, but he also evaluates the economic damage caused by The Cultural Revolution. Using statistics and data, Hu objectively analyzes its impact in economic and social terms, thereby summing up the collection with analysis on the influence of the Cultural Revolution on modern China.

As one of history's most horrific political upheavals, the Cultural Revolution began in 1966, when the Chinese Communist Party officially launched the radical movement on the orders of its autocratic chairman, Mao Zedong. He intended for the movement to revitalize China's revolutionary fervor while simultaneously accelerating the country's evolution into a true communist utopia. China's young people became the advance guard for this new revolution, forming themselves into paramilitary Red Guard units. These adolescent shock troops humiliated, beat, and murdered teachers, intellectuals, local party officials, and others whom they judged to be insufficiently devoted to Mao and his radical ideals. By the time the Cultural Revolution finally ended in 1976, it had claimed the lives of some 3 to 4 million Chinese and left many millions more physically or psychologically scarred. Illustrated with full-color and black-and-white photographs, and accompanied by a chronology, bibliography, and further resources, The Chinese Cultural Revolution, Updated Edition provides a clear and comprehensive account of how this sweeping policy changed the course of Chinese history in the 20th century. Historical spotlights and excerpts from primary source documents are also included.
