Since the publication of the still very valuable Biblioteca histórica de la filología by Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, conde de la Viñaza (Madrid, 1893), our knowledge of the history of the study of the Spanish language has grown considerably, and most manuscript and secondary sources had never been tapped before Hans-Josef Niederehe of the University of Trier courageously undertook the task to bring together any available bibliographical information together with much more recent research findings, scattered in libraries, journals and other places. The resulting Bibliografía cronológica de la lingüística, la gramática y la lexicografía del español: Desde los principios hasta el año 1600 (BICRES) began appearing in 1994. BICRES I covered the period from the early beginnings to 1600), followed by BICRES II (1601–1700), BICRES III (1701–1800), and together with Miguel Ángel Esparza Torres of Madrid there followed BICRES IV (1801 to 1860). Now, the fifth volume, has become available, covering the years from 1861 to 1899. Access to the bibliographical information of altogether 5,272 titles is facilitated by several detailed indexes, such as a short title index, a listing of printers, publishers and places of production, and an author index. More than twenty years of research in the major libraries of Spain and other European countries have gone into this unique work — relative sources of the Americas have also been covered — making it exhaustive source for any serious scholar of any possible aspect of the Spanish language.

This book provides an exhaustive historical account of how the English language was taught and learnt in Spain over two centuries. Since its origins back in 1769 with the publication of San Joaquín de Pedro's 'Gramática inglesa' until 1970, a key year in European and World affairs. A period of time ample enough to accurately gauge the impact of this social phenomenon against the backdrop of social and political unrest which looms over the whole period but also with scientific breakthroughs that shaped our modern world. The history of ELT runs parallel to those events adopting diffferent mainstrem trends ranging from the Traditional or Latin-like approach to foreign language teaching to the so-called Grammar-Translation Method and the Direct or Oral Method. However, special attention is also given to 'minor' trends such as Ecclecticism which constantly overlaps the mainstream trends. This book is the first to take a close look at how the English language was taught and learnt in Spain for a two-century period when the French language was the Spaniard's first choice when it came to learning a foreign language.
Este libro representa un compendio de todo lo que he aprendido en mi viaje como «profe de inglés» (y de lingüística) en contextos hispanoparlantes durante la última década. Durante este largo tiempo he observado múltiples dificultades en el aprendizaje de inglés que, en muchos casos, se deben a la falta de recursos apropiados, explicaciones confusas o imprecisas, y didácticas poco cautivadoras, entre otros factores. Por ende, el presente trabajo se escribe con la intención de facilitar el proceso de adquisición de la lengua inglesa a través de explicaciones de temas gramaticales concisos, en la primera lengua de los lectores. Evidentemente, el texto se enfoca en el estudiante colombiano, precisamente el que habla dialecto costeño; no obstante, el contenido aplica a cualquier interesado en aprender más sobre la gramática de la lengua inglesa. Por último, enfatizo en que este libro se ha escrito como un material de apoyo al docente, pero no se puede reemplazar una buena clase con un textbook. Este simplemente se presenta como una herramienta más en su repertorio para lanzarse en este viaje fascinante y motivante.
