Based on an ethnographic study in an urban classroom of 7- to 9-year olds, Writing Superheroes examines how young school children use popular culture, especially superhero stories, in the unofficial peer social world and in the official school literacy curriculum. In one sense, the book is about children "writing superheroes"-about children appropriating superhero stories in their fiction writing and dramatic play on the playground and in the classroom. These stories offer children identities as powerful people who do battle against evil and win. The stories, however, also reveal limiting ideological assumptions about relations between people-boys and girls, adults and children, people of varied heritages, physical demeanors, and social classes. The book, then, is also about children as "writing superheroes." With the assistance of their teacher, the observed children became superheroes of another sort, able to take on powerful cultural storylines. In this book, Anne Dyson examines how the children's interest in and conflicts about commercial culture give rise to both literacy and social learning, including learning how to participate in a community of differences.

This book is dedicated to all teachers. My Teacher Is A Superhero is about a Super Teacher who teaches and motivates students to reach their highest potential. Students can get off course and not realize the consequences of their actions until it's too late. The Super Teacher makes sure students stay on track and are empowered to succeed. In this book there are even more questions than the ones that are on the front cover. There are many insights into a number of topics along with an entertaining educational story. Learning can be fun. This book provides you with a unique way to reflect, think about your life and all the dynamics, and the future. You can answer some of the questions The Super Teacher asks very easily and others you will have to ponder upon. After The Super Teacher asks you a question there will be additional information about the subject. Questions can be common or uncommon. The common questions are the ones that you have been asked many times. You can answer them easily because you're already prepared. If you're asked your name you will be able to say it right away. You have memorized your name and no longer have to think about it. The same goes for your address or birthday. When you're asked a common question such as how are you doing? Then you have to give more thought because your answer could vary each time. Uncommon questions are the ones you're only asked once in awhile or it's the first time you're being asked. More time has to be spent on an uncommon question because you might still be trying to figure out an answer. Have you ever heard someone say, that's a good question? When someone is making a statement like that, they're really saying, "I'm going to think about the question." This book is to encourage you to think and build your self confidence in answering questions. This can help prepare you for questions that you're asked daily. You can share what is going on in your life without having to reveal something personable by having it made public. Certain things in your life can be kept private but still be expressed. You can have an interactive experience where you're able to participate and answer questions from The Super Teacher. You can choose the way you want to answer them. Be creative and have fun. The Super Teacher wants you to do well in life.

The school accountability movement’s focus solely on improving standardized test scores is dehumanizing. There is no standardized child. In the rush to quantify, evaluate, and ostensibly improve the American educational system, we have forgotten that education is complicated. Any attempt to distill it into a simplistic measure will fall short – and will compromise the nobility of the work. How can teachers continue to do the incredibly challenging work of effective education in an environment that can be downright damaging? We can save the soul of education by resisting the dehumanization of students. Teachers can shield children by embracing social-emotional learning, building trust, and displaying compassion. There is no quick-fix to creating a nurturing relationship. There is no single data point that can measure it. Teachers must commit to being present, paying attention, maintaining consistency, engaging in hard work, practicing humility, and working together. Angels and Superheroes provides specific, reproducible practices designed to help teachers cultivate trust and compassion, while managing the pressures of the testing movement. With time-proven theories and cutting-edge research, this book provides engaging examples, concrete strategies, and implementable resources to support teachers in bridging the divide between why they chose this career field – the children, and that which is currently being required of them – the test scores.
