What's the big idea? That's a question students are asked all the time in papers, assessments, and standardized writing tests of every sort. Whether summarizing research sources or synopsizing the plot of a two-hundred page novel, the ability to cut through extraneous details and describe the major themes and highlights of a text is key to success in school and in life. Until now, however, summarization has been difficult to teach and learn, but with Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling, you'll discover a powerful and practical way to teach these vital skills. Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling is a slim, do-it-all guide that presents everything you need for teaching kids to separate out trivial items in their reading and then identify and communicate the main ideas and crucial details. Emily Kissner breaks summarization down into smaller, more manageable skills-such as paraphrasing, writing synopses, retelling, and restating the main-idea-illustrating what good summarization looks like and how to adjust your teaching to fit your students' needs. She offers not only methods for individual and group instruction, but also handy, reproducible resources, such as assessment checklists, forms for group work, peer-response sheets, and sample passages for students to practice with. Best of all, Kissner's approach is a student-centered alternative to more traditional skill-and-drill preparations. Supported by research and tested in classrooms, Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling gives you both big ideas for powerful teaching and important particulars to help you plan instruction and analyze your students' progress. What's the big idea behind teaching summarizing? Read Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling and find out.

This book explores the effectiveness of listen-to-summarize tasks as a tool to assess lecture comprehension ability. It especially focuses on listen-to-summarize tasks that represent listeners’ meaning building and the discourse construction of the lecture for listening assessment purposes. It discusses in depth the nature of lecture comprehension and introduces the approaches to assessing it. It also presents teachers’ and students’ perceptions of listen-to-summarize task demands and their respective implications. By observing interactions between test-takers’ cognitive processes and the task itself, the book explores the effectiveness of these tasks. It also examines the discrepancy in cognitive processes between different language competence levels in detail, shedding light upon current research on lecture comprehension assessment and offering insights into listening comprehension instruction.

This dynamic approach to an exciting form of teaching and learning will inspire students to gain insights and complex thinking skills from the school library, their community, and the wider world. Guided inquiry is a way of thinking, learning, and teaching that changes the culture of a school into a collaborative inquiry community. Global interconnectedness calls for new skills, new knowledge, and new ways of learning to prepare students with the abilities and competencies they need to meet the challenges of a changing world. The challenge for the information-age school is to educate students for living and working in this information-rich technological environment. At the core of being educated today is knowing how to learn and innovate from a variety of sources. Through guided inquiry, students see school learning and real life meshed in meaningful ways. They develop higher order thinking and strategies for seeking meaning, creating, and innovating. Today's schools are challenged to develop student talent, coupling the rich resources of the school library with those of the community and wider world. How well are you preparing your students to draw on the knowledge and wisdom of the past while using today's technology to advance new discoveries in the future? This book is the introduction to guided inquiry. It is the place to begin to consider and plan how to develop an inquiry learning program for your students.

This book is about two innovative methods for teachers of bilingual students to use in improving their academic achievement. Transacquisition Pedagogy or TAP developed by Tauwehe Sophie Tamati is the method described in the book’s first part. It uses principles of flexible bilingualism and a task sequenced approach. The success of TAP in an intervention study in two of New Zealand’s Māori schools illustrates how cognitive and linguistic processes can be used to increase student conceptual understanding and to improve their academic biliteracy. Part two is about the Curriculum Design Coherence Model (CDC Model) created by Elizabeth Rata. It shows teachers how to design concepts, content and competencies to connect academic knowledge and thinking processes. The CDC Model has proved its success in the Knowledge-Rich School Project in New Zealand and England. TransAcquistion Pedagogy and the CDC Model are aligned. TAP works by putting the CDC design method into practice. The separate usefulness of TAP and the CDC Model and the added value of their alignment provides an innovative approach to education. Used together or separately they provide invaluable teaching methods for bilingual, immersion and mainstream education.
