Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. For as long as people have traveled to distant lands, they have brought home objects to certify the journey. More than mere merchandise, these travel souvenirs take on a personal and cultural meaning that goes beyond the object itself. Drawing on several millennia of examples-from the relic-driven quests of early Christians, to the mass-produced tchotchkes that line the shelves of a Disney gift shop-travel writer Rolf Potts delves into a complicated history that explores issues of authenticity, cultural obligation, market forces, human suffering, and self-presentation. Souvenirs are shown for what they really are: not just objects, but personalized forms of folk storytelling that enable people to make sense of the world and their place in it.' Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic. Souvenir features illustrations by Cedar Van Tassel

Excerpt from The Public Schools of Albany, N. Y: Illustrated; A Souvenir Volume When Edward A. Freeman, the eminent English historian, first saw Albany from the heights opposite the city, he pronounced it to be the most picturesque city in the United States. It is no wonder that such an expression came from the distinguished traveller when he saw spread before him the Hudson spanned by graceful and airy bridges, the city rising majestically on its many hills, its spires and towers penciled against the western sky; while surmounting and crowning the whole, the magnificent capitol dominated and completed the picture. This view would impress the most indifferent observer, and reflection would naturally lead him to the opinion that Albany must be a cultivated and progressive city. The beauty of its exterior, its tine buildings and beautiful parks are strong material evidences of Albany's worth. It is not, however, in such things alone that one seeks for indications of the progressiveness, the enterprise, the culture and the high purpose of an American city. The true index is to be found in the condition of the city's public school system. This book is a witness that Albany has been alive to her duties in this regard, in so far as the printer's and the engraver's arts can portray a school system. It is fair to assume, however, that when a city does its full duty in providing all material appliances of the best order, that the outcome of the schools in the kinds of men and women produced will also be of the best. First published in 1968, this classic work remains the basic reference book for collectors and fanciers of American spoons. Now offered in a new edition, it will be a welcome resource in your library. Spoons themselves originated in prehistoric times, when shells performed their function for the inhabitants of southern Europe, but spoons as commemorative items began with the Niagra Falls Suspension Bridge Spoon patented by Myron H. Kinsley in 1881. Soon their popularity spread as ideal mementos for practically every conceivable event, personage, or natural wonder. Ranging from expensive sterling silver sets to fifteen cent mailorder spoons, the variety of design, quality and interests reflected in this richly illustrated book is truly impressive.

Buried within the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History exists an astonishing group of historical relics from the pre-Revolutionary War era to the present day, many of which have never been on display. Donated to the museum by generations of souvenir collectors, these ordinary objects of extraordinary circumstance all have amazing tales to tell about their roles in American history. Souvenir Nation presents fifty of the museum's most eccentric items. Objects include a chunk broken off Plymouth Rock; a lock of Andrew Jackson's hair; a dish towel used as the flag of truce to end the Civil War; the microphones used by FDR for his Fireside Chats; and the chairs that seated Nixon and Kennedy in their 1960 television debate.

Excerpt from Somerville, Past and Present: An Illustrated Historical Souvenir Commemorative of the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Establishment of the City Government of Somerville, Massachusetts In placing this volume before the public, the editors desire to express their gratitude for the kindly encouragement, the more than liberal support they have received from the people of Somerville. A work of such magnitude as this, one involving such a great amount of detail labor, could not well be prepared without the generous assistance, the hearty co-operation of a large portion of the community; and that such aid has been given us, together with a generally expressed approval of our undertaking, we gladly put upon record. In addition to much other valuable assistance that has been received, many important papers have been prepared for us, and they present a fairly complete resume of the history of the city's various institutions. The scholarly contributions of Charles D. Elliot, George I. Vincent, Joshua H. Davis, Frank E. Merrill, John S. Hayes, Albert E. Winship, William E. Brigham, J. O. Hayden, and many others will receive the approval of all who are interested in Somerville's history, and they will serve as an invaluable basis for the work of the future historian. To the "Somerville Journal," the "Somerville Citizen" and John K. Whiting we are indebted for several of the illustrations we have used, also to Mr. Gordon A. Southworth for the portraits of "Citizens for whom Somerville Schools were named," and for reports containing their biographies. The typographical and artistic features of the volume speak for themselves: it has been our constant aim to secure the best available work, and we hope that our efforts will receive the approbation of the public. Somerville is a municipality of diversified interests, and of many social centers. Hence, he who is prominent in one section may, perhaps, be almost unknown in others.
